Background

Food Forests PH is an environment conservation organization borne out of the desire to feed communities with local produce using natural farming technologies. We partner with communities who desire to become more food sufficient through hyperlocal food production. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of closing the gap of long supply chains in food prod

uction and distribution. Closing off borders in different parts of the country meant that importation of food from other provinces and other countries are more difficult. Converting unused lands in the community into food forests can ease the problem of transporting food from other places to the point of consumption. Bringing food closer to where it is consumed not only reduces carbon emissions brought about by transportation, but it also allows people to appreciate and know more about where our food comes from. Through the knowledge, experience, and expertise of our founder Kit Ian Mausisa, Kiss The Ground (U.S.) scholar, Organic Agriculture Production graduate and part-owner of Mahayahay Natural Farm, we look forward to creating a future where access to food is no longer a privilege but a basic human right. We look forward to a future of hyper localized food production, from growing raw food to the processing of food products. Industrialized food production has converted vast lands of forests into agricultural land which kills biodiversity, increases carbon emissions, and detaches humans from the food they consume. Mission

Our mission is to convert 100 unused lands in the Philippines into food forests by 2030. The movement aims not only to develop unused lands into productive food forests, but also to cultivate a culture of farming within its community members. Values

Enrich- We make sure that communities not only get a head start towards their own food forest, but also to make it an enriching experience for them and carry it throughout their participation in community life. Cultivate- Building food forests is not just about growing food, it is also about cultivating people's character and attitude towards their consumption, starting with food. We have to reduce plowing and start building soil

Stop 2-dimensional farming and start building more natural vertical farms that use all layers in not 3 but 4 dimensions.

The 3rd dimension is going up! But the 4th dimension is time:
When one crop is harvested, another one is already growing to mature in the meantime

We want biodiversity as a cornerstone of our farms
โ€ข They reduce or eliminate pesticides
โ€ข They built fertility, making us less dependent or even completely independent of artificial fertilizer (straight of Hormuz blockage anyone?)

Farming in the 3d dimension means: planting way more trees, perennials, hedges.

The result:

Imagine the entire world grows food like this and anybody would try to convince us to farm the way we farm conventionally today: they would declare this insane

Lizards in your garden eat slugs, mosquitoes, roaches, and beetles โ€” no chemicals needed.

But pesticides kill the bad bugs and the good guys.

We sometimes forget that we owe our lives to something we ignore: soil ๐Ÿชฑ

The earth used to be one big rock. Thanks to billions of years of evolution, fungi, bacteria, plants, and bigger animals transformed this rock into fertile soils.

Without soil, no food, no decent climate, no humans.

The best investment we can make in the longevity of humanity is to protect our soils.

Start by eating food that regenerates soil instead of depletes it.
Create a regenerative soil building factory in your own back yard :)

The condition of soil is critical for plant health.Gardeners have to check and amend their soil accordingly.

Loamy Soil: This type is slightly moist, fine, and easily cultivable with good drainage. Its pH is acidic. To maintain loamy soil, it's recommended to use compost and fertilizers regularly.

Clay Soil: Known for being sticky when dry and having poor drainage, clay soil is rich in nutrients and also acidic. The maintenance tip here is to add 3-4 inches of humus or compost and till it into the soil.

Sandy Soil: This soil is grainy with excellent drainage, though it doesn't retain water well and is low in nutrients. To enhance sandy soil, gardeners should add compost and mulch for moisture retention.

Silty Soil: Silty soil feels slimy and retains moisture but has poor drainage. It's nutrient-rich, and the tip for maintenance involves annually adding wood shavings, compost, or other organic materials.

Chalky Soil: Characterized as stony and having good drainage, this type dries easily and is high in calcium carbonate with an acidic pH. To improve chalky soil, it's advised to add mulch for moisture retention.

Peaty Soil: This type is moist and spongy, retaining water well but has poor drainage. It heats quickly in the spring and has a slightly acidic pH. The guide suggests amending it by mixing in compost and lime.
