A clean windshield. A lamppost without moths. A night without fireflies.
At first glance, these seem like just everyday changes. But perhaps they are signs of something much bigger.
For decades, it was common to end a trip with a windshield covered in insects, to see lampposts surrounded by moths, or to spend summer nights watching fireflies in the countryside.
Today, these scenes are becoming increasingly rare. And when insects disappear, we don't just lose their presence.
We lose pollinators, food for birds, bats, amphibians, and so many other animals. We lose thousands of small relationships that sustain the balance of ecosystems.
And this change doesn't happen by chance.
Simplified landscapes, degraded soils, loss of native vegetation, habitat fragmentation, and land-use models that eliminate diversity transform living environments into increasingly silent places.
Nature never functions in isolated parts.
When flowers disappear, pollinators disappear.
When pollinators disappear, seeds and fruits decrease.
When seeds and fruits decrease, food and shelter for countless species are lacking.
Everything is connected.
That's why agroforestry goes far beyond producing food.
It recovers soils, increases plant diversity, creates different vegetation layers, protects water, and rebuilds the conditions for thousands of life forms to find shelter again.
It's not just about planting trees.
It's about rebuilding ecosystems.
And when we restore complexity to the landscape, nature does what it has always known how to do: it returns.
