🌿 What if we stopped trying to control rivers and started working with them?

For decades, riverbanks have often been reinforced with concrete, riprap, and other hard structures to prevent erosion. While these methods can provide immediate protection, they can also change the natural movement of water, reduce habitat, and simply transfer erosion and flood energy further downstream.

But wait....there is another way.

Nature based river design works with the natural behavior of waterways rather than constantly fighting against it.

One approach is to create vegetated meander shelves along appropriate sections of a river. By carefully shaping the riverbank into planted, stepped areas, the landscape can help slow and disperse water energy during high flows.

Deep-rooted native vegetation can further stabilize the soil, while the planted shelves provide habitat for insects, fish, birds, and other wildlife. As water slows, sediment can settle naturally, helping the river system evolve instead of forcing it into a rigid form.

The goal isn't to make a river behave like a concrete channel.

It's to create a riverbank that is resilient, adaptive, and alive.

"Nature-Based Play for Better Child Development"

RESEARCH | The rapid urbanization and domination of concrete landscapes in cities diminish children’s access to natural environments and traditional outdoor play. These sedentary and technology-driven activities raise concerns about the potential consequences for child development.

This study aims to explore the lived experiences of teachers in a child development center (CDC) in implementing nature-based play (NBP) and how urbanization and decreasing green spaces in developing countries impact NBP. Using multiple case studies in the Philippines, the study interviewed teachers from a child development laboratory and applied narrative analysis.

Results showed that the teachers perceived NBP as a form of play that happens in the natural environment, involves natural elements, is unstructured, and aids in learning. Moreover, NBP is accorded a crucial role in all domains of early childhood development, including physical activity, cognitive learning, as well as social and emotional development. However, weather disturbances, safety concerns, increasing teacher workloads, and the expansion of urban infrastructure reduce natural and green spaces and challenge NBP implementation.

Findings provide recommendations for more inclusive development by incorporating green spaces in urban planning and design, as well as community participation in NBP for more holistic and resilient child development.

DESIGN TIP: What Makes a Landscape Feel Naturally Balanced?

One simple design element can make a big difference: CURVES. ✨

Here’s how we will design them:

1. 🌱 Layer by Height
Arrange plants from low to tall, groundcovers at the front, medium-height shrubs in the middle, and taller plants or small trees toward the back.
→ Creates depth, dimension, and a more natural transition.

2. 🌿 Plant in Drifts & Masses
Instead of placing plants one by one, group them into sweeping masses or REPEATING drifts that follow the curve.
→ Creates a stronger visual impact and makes the planting feel more intentional.

3. 🌾 Repeat for Rhythm
Repeat selected plant species or foliage forms along the curve.
→ Repetition creates rhythm and visual continuity, helping the garden feel cohesive rather than random.

4. 🌀 Echo the Curve
Let the shape of the planting bed subtly relate to nearby lawns, pathways, patios, or other landscape elements.
→ Repeating similar curves creates a sense of harmony and flow throughout the garden.

5. 🌳 Anchor the Turns
Use a small tree, specimen plant, boulder, or other focal element near an important bend in the curve.
→ Gives the eye something to discover and helps emphasize the movement of the landscape.

6. 🪨 Add Natural Accents
Strategically place boulders, rocks, or natural materials within the planting composition.
→ Adds contrast, texture, and visual weight while making the planting feel more organic.

7. 📏 Give Plants Room to Grow
Plan spacing based on the mature size of each plant, rather than how small it looks when newly planted.
→ Prevents overcrowding and allows the planting bed to develop beautifully over time.

8. 🌿 Soften the Edge
Use groundcovers, low grasses, or cascading plants along the front edge of the curve.
→ Helps soften the transition between the planting bed and lawn, paving, or other surfaces.

9. 👀 Create a Visual Destination
Use the curve to gradually reveal a focal point—such as a tree, sculpture, seating area, water feature, or garden feature.
→ Makes the landscape more engaging by creating a sense of discovery.

FRIDAY SITE STORIES: Site Visit for a Subdivision Amenity

-Two existing water tank towers.
-A deep creek cutting through a narrow site.
-A challenging 5-meter elevation difference.

At first glance, these may seem like site limitations. But for us, challenge accepted!

Instead of treating these existing conditions as liabilities, we see them as opportunities to create something unique.

Why hide the water tanks when they can become part of the design?
Why fight the creek when it can become the heart of the landscape?
Why flatten the terrain when the levels can create interesting spaces and experiences?

We don't always need to erase a site's challenges. Sometimes, we just need to celebrate them.

Every site has its own story. Great design discovers the possibilities within it.

What’s True Wednesday? I Design MYTH vs. FACT:

MYTH: Renovations are always cheaper than building new.

FACT: Renovations can involve hidden conditions, demolition, structural limitations, and extensive MEPF modifications.

Good design isn't about automatically choosing renovation or new construction. It's about understanding the building, evaluating the options, and finding the solution that provides the best value in the long run.

"Because sometimes, the most economical building is the one you renovate and sometimes, it's the one you build new."
