STOP COVERING YOUR OUTDOOR UNIT WHEN IT RAINS 🌧️

Here's a myth worth busting before the rainy season peaks: covering your outdoor aircon unit with a tarp or plastic sheet does not protect it. Outdoor units are engineered to sit outside in every kind of weather, rain included.

What actually happens when you cover it: moisture and heat get trapped inside, leading to rust, corrosion, and mold buildup, often worse than anything the rain alone would cause.

The real risks during rainy season are debris blocking the unit and water pooling at the base from poor drainage, not the rain itself.

Traveling for a few weeks, or heading home from abroad for a while? ✈️ Do not just switch off the aircon and go. A few minutes of prep protects it while you are away.

📦 BEFORE YOU LEAVE
• Clean the filter — a clogged one left sitting for weeks collects dust and mold; a clean one means fresher air when you return.
• Dry the coil — run Fan or Auto-Dry mode for a while before the final shutoff so moisture does not sit inside and grow mold.
• Switch it off at the breaker or unplug it — with nobody home to react, this shields the electronics from surges and brownouts.
• Do NOT wrap the indoor unit in plastic — it traps moisture and encourages mold. Leave it uncovered indoors.

🏡 WHEN YOU RETURN
• Turn the breaker back on, run it on Cool, give it a few minutes.
• If it smells musty or cools weakly, the coil probably needs a clean before regular use.
• Away for a very long stretch? A quick service check is worth it before you rely on it again.

Quick question: does your aircon bring in air from outside? ❄️ Most people think so — but it does not. Here is what it actually does.

🔁 IT RECIRCULATES YOUR ROOM AIR
A standard split-type aircon pulls in the air already in your room, cools and dehumidifies it, then blows it back out — essentially a closed loop. (Many window-type units do have a small vent setting that lets in a little outdoor air, but most of the cooling is still recirculated room air.)

😮 WHY THAT MATTERS
For cooling, this is perfectly normal. But a sealed room closed up for hours with several people can start to feel stuffy, because the same air just keeps circulating.

✅ TWO EASY FIXES
• Let outdoor air in now and then — open a window or door for a few minutes, or run an exhaust fan, especially in a crowded or long-occupied room.
• Keep your filters clean — since the same air recirculates over and over, a clean filter means cleaner air for everyone breathing it.

Have a dog or cat at home? 🐶🐱 Your aircon is working harder than your neighbour’s — and it needs a slightly different routine.

🧶 WHY PETS AFFECT YOUR AIRCON
Fur and dander float through the air and get pulled straight into the filter. It clogs much faster than in a home without pets — and a clogged filter chokes airflow, weakens cooling, and quietly raises your electricity use. Fur also settles on the outdoor unit, blocking heat release.

✅ WHAT TO DO DIFFERENTLY
• Check the filter WEEKLY instead of every 2-3 weeks, and wash it whenever it looks coated
• Brush your pets regularly — less loose fur in the air, less fur in the unit
• Sweep fur and debris away from the outdoor unit
• Vacuum floors and sofas more often, so the aircon never pulls that fur in
• Keep the professional deep clean every 3-4 months — fur reaches deep into the coil and blower where filter-washing cannot help

Getting a new aircon installed soon? ❄️ A smooth install is mostly about preparation. Here is exactly what to expect.

📦 BEFORE THEY ARRIVE
• Clear the wall and the space below it — move furniture, take down frames or shelves
• Make the outdoor spot accessible: unlock gates, clear the area, secure your pets
• Confirm your electrical supply is ready (older homes may need a dedicated circuit or breaker)
• Decide where the drain water will go — somewhere sensible, away from walkways

🔨 ON THE DAY
Expect drilling, a bit of dust, and a few hours of work depending on the setup. The team mounts the bracket and indoor unit, positions the outdoor unit, runs the refrigerant piping and drain line, wires everything, then vacuums the lines before charging the system. That last step is easy to skip and matters a lot for long-term performance.

🔊 1. NEW OR UNUSUAL NOISES
Rattling often means a loose part. Grinding or squealing points to a motor or bearing issue. Any new sound deserves a check while it is still small.

💨 2. WEAK AIRFLOW
Fan sounds normal but barely any air comes out? The filter, coil, or blower is probably clogged.

Meralco raised residential electricity rates by ₱0.3428 per kWh this July, bringing the average bill for a typical 200 kWh household up by about ₱69 a month. If you're running an old or non-inverter aircon, that increase adds up fast.

One room in your house never gets as cool as the others — same size aircon, totally different result? ☀️ Your unit is probably fine. The ROOM is the problem.

🔥 IT IS CALLED HEAT LOAD
Heat load is how much heat a room takes in and holds. Two rooms of the exact same size can have wildly different heat loads.

⚠️ WHAT PUSHES IT UP
• Direct afternoon sun — especially a west-facing room
• Large windows or glass doors (glass lets in a LOT of heat)
• A poorly insulated ceiling under a hot roof
• Heat-producing appliances: computers, TVs, ovens, lights
• More people in the room than usual

✅ HOW TO FIX IT (cheapest first)
1. Block the sun — thick curtains, blinds, or window film stop a surprising amount of heat before it ever gets in.
2. Cut indoor heat — move hot appliances, switch to LED lights.
3. Improve ceiling insulation if the room sits right under the roof.
4. Size the aircon for the actual heat load, not just floor area. A sunny room may genuinely need more capacity than its square meters suggest.
