How many steps does it take to build 57 steps? Mereana clocked up 15,000 in just one day. Add in another two people over seven days, and that’s a lot of steps to build some steps!
The team demolished the old staircase and built a new one on this steep section in South Titirangi. If you live around the Waitākere Ranges, you’ll know the challenge - beautiful bush surroundings, but getting from the road to the house can be a workout.
Living among all that lush bush also means keeping an eye on the stairs and walkways we use every day. Shade, damp conditions and fallen leaves can hold moisture around timber, encouraging accelerated deterioration. It’s one of the trade-offs of living in this lovely part of Auckland, and something we regularly help local homeowners work through.
A special mention to our newest apprentice, 19-year-old Alizay. She’s swapped Pak’nSave for building in the bush - quite a change of scenery! This was her first project with us, working alongside her aunt Mereana, who’s getting close to qualifying herself. Lovely to see them learning and building together.
And cheers to James - a solid bloke and a great mentor. Having someone patient and experienced alongside you makes a real difference when you’re starting out, and we’re lucky to have him on the team.
