A fresh coat for one of Wellington’s most recognisable heritage buildings.
Built in 1900–01, the original Cable Car Winding House played an important role in Wellington’s transport history. The machinery inside once hauled the city’s cable cars through the tunnels and up the steep Kelburn incline. Today, the Category 2 historic building is home to the Cable Car Museum.
Our Painting + Decorating and Maintenance teams recently completed exterior repainting and maintenance work on the Winding House and its newer building addition.
As with any older building, the preparation was an important part of the job. Painted surfaces were treated for moss and mould, softly washed, scraped and sanded where coatings were failing. Our team also treated exposed metal fixings, completed minor repairs to weatherboards and trim, and replaced a rusted head flashing above the heritage entrance doors.
The original building was then primed and repainted to replicate its existing colour scheme, while the timber cladding on the newer addition was prepared and restained.
It was a pleasure to play a small part in maintaining a building that has been connected with Wellington’s iconic Cable Car for well over a century!
