Arkhē is a residential architecture studio based in Tauranga, New Zealand, focused on designing homes that respond to people and place.

Our work spans rural, coastal, and urban settings, with each project shaped by its environment and the lives it holds.

Ahipara House — consented, ready for construction.

Ahipara House went out as an idea more than a year ago — two pavilions stepping down a steep coastal site above Te Kōhanga (Shipwreck Bay). What comes back after engineers, council and a real budget is never the same drawing. It is usually a better one.

Looking forward to seeing this one take shape.

Arkhē has opened a second studio, in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Papāmoa continues. The North Island work carries on — projects from Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington to Ahipara in the Far North.

In the south, the studio is open for new work across Waitaha Canterbury and Te Waipounamu the South Island — the alpine and rural ground this practice has long designed toward. Every project starts with a conversation.

Ōhiwa Harbour House

North light spills in through a band of high windows, while the courtyard to the west opens the room to afternoon sun and a glimpse of the harbour — daylight from two directions, privacy held from the property next door.

Inside, the palette is pared back to two honest materials—plywood lining the walls and ceiling, polished concrete flooring. Nothing painted, nothing precious; robust, tactile surfaces made for relaxed coastal living.

The brief valued restraint over polish: warm, sunny and light-filled, underpinned by passive solar principles and an honest, low-maintenance palette suited to coastal living.

Ōhiwa Harbour House

To the west, the elevation opens generously to the harbour through full-height glazing. Tempering the afternoon sun and exposure that come with it, a deep verandah—drawn from the coastal bach vernacular of the eastern Bay of Plenty—shades the glass, while a layer of operable timber screens modulates light and privacy across it.

Ōhiwa Harbour House

A coastal home that opens to the harbour—or quietly closes against it.
The west elevation is full-height glass, holding the outlook across Ōhiwa Harbour. A deep verandah and a layer of operable timber screens temper the afternoon sun and exposure that come with it.
Slid open, the screens dissolve the line between living and water. Drawn closed, the same elevation reads as a calm, textured timber wall—one façade, tuned to the season and the hour.
Quiet, unpretentious, and grounded in the bach vernacular of the eastern Bay of Plenty.
