Found a house plan you like? Before getting too attached to it, imagine it sitting on your actual section.

Where is north? Where are the best views? How does the driveway work? What happens to your outdoor living, and where does the weather normally come from?

A good floor plan and a good section don't automatically create a good home. They need to work together.

A house plan can tick every box — three or four bedrooms, two bathrooms, double garage and open-plan living.

But there are two questions that matter just as much:

Does it work for the way your family lives? And does it work on your section?

Your land has its own sun, views, wind, access and planning requirements. A plan that works beautifully on one section may need quite different thinking on another.

That's why we see standard house plans as a starting point. Use them for ideas, work out what you like, then make the design work around you and your land.
