Atley Road, Arthurs Point

We’re currently on site at Arthurs Point working alongside Strata on a retaining wall stabilisation project following a retaining wall failure and subsequent slip.

We’re drilling to approximately 12 metres, hitting rock at 6m and continuing a further 6m into solid rock to achieve a solid bond for our fully encapsulated anchors. Once installed, Strata will drill and install their piles between our anchors, waler beams will then be fitted between the piles, and our anchors will lock off against these to secure the wall and prevent any future movement.

The main challenge on this job has been the soft ground conditions above the rock. To keep the hole stable we’re using the Robit Casing System, advancing the casing as we drill and retracting it section by section once the anchor is in place and grouted. It adds time to the process but ensures a clean hole, a good grout column, and a reliable bond into the rock.

Great work from the team here on navigating a tricky site.

Atmore Terrace, Nelson

Ground Anchor Systems was recently engaged by to complete slope stability improvements on Atmore Terrace.

This included the install of 11 6.0m soil nails to provide support to the MacMat R covering. Steel cables were also used to provide additional support.

Green MacMat R was chosen to help blend in with the surrounds then this was hydro seeded to help start the natural revegetation of the site.

This project was completed on program with both the residents and NCC very happy with the final product.

Dodson Valley and Scotia Street Waterways, Nelson

Ground Anchor Systems has been engaged by and to complete three stream bed upgrade projects across nelson this Year. Dodson Valley and Scotia Street have been completed already with Alton Street scheduled for the end of the year.

Each site has its own challenges and varied ground conditions. Both permeated and temporary 600mm casing was used to mitigate collapsing waterlogged ground and allow for the timber poles to be installed. This was driven using our high torque drive unit.

The design includes both timber pole retaining walls and anchored shotcrete acting as scouring protection during flood events.

These projects have been completed in tight time frames and weather windows to reduce the time in the streambeds and minimise the environmental impact and disruption to local residents.

Over summer our team installed four hand drilled micropiles for the new Vortex slide foundation.

With a short lead in and a two day window, all gear including our air compressor, air hoses and hand drill, had to be craned into position beneath the new Skyline building.

Even on a small, straightforward job, the challenges were real. Variable ground conditions, tight access and design requirements meant hand drilling was the best viable method. Add in wet weather and a live Luge track operating adjacent to the work site, and the team had to work with precision while keeping the public safe in one of Queenstown’s busiest attractions.

A rewarding project in a unique setting, it’s always good to put our skills to work on infrastructure that keeps one of Queenstown’s major attractions moving.
