Not sure if everyone's aware but two New Zealanders, Ricky Maulder and Bruce Salmon, discovered and named a few Nepenthes in Sumatra in the 90's. Here's a couple of the entries in Stewart McPherson's books.
Bruce also wrote the book on NZ Native Carnivorous Plants. He is going to drop off some copies at the Auckland Plant Market so comment below or message me so he knows how many to bring. It's $30 which is an absolute bargain.
Ricky is joining us at the market selling some of his Nepenthes and Tillandsia. If past markets are anything to go by they will be high end stuff and you will be racing me to buy them first.

✨ Free seeds ✨

There's a free packet of seeds from this video to the first 2 people to comment. The only catch is you'll have to pick them up from me at the Auckland Plant Market on Sunday.

🌿 The mother is the first photo and the father is one of the other two ie x veitchii #4 or #3.

The last photo are the 2 piles of seeds.

Before I forget and lose the photo here's the parents of some hort. veitchii seed and the tray I sowed on 27 September

✨ Pollinating Sarracenia ✨

You should be seeing your Sarracenia flowering by or about now so now is the time to pollinate them.
Pollination isn't always necessary to get viable seed but I find you get a much better take if you pollinate by hand. Plus you can create whatever hybrids you want if you pollinate them yourself.

✨ Lake Ohia, Northland ✨

Stopped off at Lake Ohia on my way to Mangonui this afternoon.
The first photo is how I'd usually access it but it's been full of water the last few times I've been there including last Summer. Same again today so I went along a little and wandered in quickly. I didnt have alot of time but found this Drosera binata pretty much straight away.
I took a quick vid to give you an idea of the kind of habitat our native Drosera can sometimes be found in.

✨ Sarracenia flava var. rugelii ✨

Well I think it's a rugelii ... it doesn't show the red throat until later in the season so maybe its crossed with a straight green Sarracenia of some description.
This thing is absolutely covered in flowers this year. Usually the S. flava var. cuprea are the first to come away but not this year.
Most of the Sarracenia are well behind where they would normally be. Must have been the unusually cold snap we had in late Winter.
I'll have to find something to pollinate it with.

✨ Nepenthes singalana ✨

This thing has big pitchers for the size of the plant. It seems to be reasonably fast growing too. I only got it in June last year as a small plant.
N. singalana is one of the parents of N. 'Bill Bailey' which explains the dark lower pitchers of N. 'Bill Bailey'.
It grows between 2000 to 2900m so can get quite cold in it's natural habitat. Maybe down to 7° to 8°C. This plant got down to 0.5° and 0.8°C over 2 separate nights this Winter (August I think) and as you can see it has grown well despite those low temperatures.

✨ Bogor Botanical Gardens ✨

Yesterday was a trip to Bogor Botanical Gardens around an hour South of Jakarta. It is an extensive, mature park like garden with a wide variety of different collections, including a Nepenthes house. It is well worth a visit.
They had a wide selection of Nepenthes including some I'd never seen in the flesh before like N. longiptera and N. sumatrana as well as some I'd never even heard of before, namely, N. treubiana, N. neoguineensis and N. x neglecta.
I've included a photo of an outside section of tall healthy looking Neps that you couldn't access. There was a shop with TC Neps for sale which, with my limited Indonesian language skills, I believe they created on site.

✨ Mesilau, Kundasang, Sabah ✨

We spent the morning wandering around the general Mesilau area.
I would never have believed in a million years that we would find Nepenthes lowii and N. edwardsiana growing at 1530 to 1540 masl!!!
I've thrown in some photos of the landscape so you can get a feel for where we were and where they were growing.
PS. The swingbridge gets more dodgy the more you zoom in 😅
