🌿SMALL SPACE PRIVACY TREES // You don't need a mile-long list, just a few solid performers to cover all the bases.

Here are five of our go-to privacy trees for hedging in small spaces. 

Portuguese Laurel 🌿
☀️ Light: Full sun to part shade
🧭 Aspect: North, east or west
📈 Growth: Moderate
✂️ Prune: Late spring after flowering, then a tidy in late summer

Fern Pine 🌲
☀️ Light: Full sun to part shade
🧭 Aspect: North, east or west
📈 Growth: Slow to moderate
✂️ Prune: Light trim in spring or summer to hold its shape

Ficus Tuffi 🪴
☀️ Light: Full sun to part shade
🧭 Aspect: North, east or west (keep it out of frost pockets)
📈 Growth: Moderate to fast
✂️ Prune: Clip 2–3 times through spring and summer

Green Goddess Bamboo 🎋
☀️ Light: Full sun to part shade
🧭 Aspect: North, east or west
📈 Growth: Fast (it's a clumping type, so it won't run)
✂️ Prune: Thin out old canes in late winter or early spring. Trim the tops any time.

Evergreen Ash 🌳
☀️ Light: Full sun to part shade
🧭 Aspect: North or east is best
📈 Growth: Fast
✂️ Prune: Late winter or early spring to shape it and lift the canopy

🌿 SMALL GARDEN TIPS // It might seem counterintuitive, but hiding part of your garden makes it feel bigger 👀

If you can see a whole small space at a glance, your brain decides there's nothing more to it. Split it into partially hidden zones and there's always a little more to discover. Each zone gives you a reason to wander through, so the garden starts to feel like several spaces instead of one. 

One of the easiest ways to do this is by adding a screen.

This one is powder-coated aluminium, anchored to the deck. Unlike timber, it won't rot and never needs repainting. We chose a simple, open pattern so you still catch glimpses through it. It hides just enough to separate the zones, without either one feeling closed in.
