Last week we looked at why more Kiwis are building granny flats, and the question that comes next is how much does one cost?
Here's a starting point. Our smallest granny flat plan, the 60m² Hector, is a popular place to begin.
From there, three things shape the project: the plan you choose, where you're building, and whether you change the plan.
Then there's the site work that can catch people out, like excavation, drainage, council fees, driveways, power and water connections, fencing and landscaping. It pays to plan for these from the start.
The rules have changed too. Since January, some single-storey granny flats up to 70m² can be built without building or resource consent, as long as every condition is met. Not every design or section qualifies, so it's worth checking early.
That's why we'd rather talk about your section before we talk about a price. Good design isn't about spending more. It's about wasting less.
