Here’s a work-in-progress look at a project currently underway with the team at Coast & Country Homes.

We’ve been on site at this heritage home in stages, carefully preserving its original timber flooring while seamlessly integrating new flooring to match the existing character throughout the home.

To do this, we’ve used a custom-spec engineered European oak, supplied raw and installed in both plank and site-made herringbone patterns. Once installation is complete, the floors will be sanded, custom stained, and coated to create a consistent finish that blends beautifully with the home's original staircase and existing timber features.

How long does engineered European Oak flooring last?

When looked after, it can last for decades. Much of that comes down to the thickness of the wear layer and the quality of the installation. In this regard, it pays to use the specialists!

Engineered Oak is built for stability. A genuine European Oak wear layer sits over a multi-layer birch ply core, helping the floor handle the natural changes in temperature and moisture that come with everyday living.

You still get the warmth and character European oak is known for, with the added stability needed for modern homes, underfloor heating, and a wide range of spaces.

A timeless staple for good reason.

We worked alongside Henry Dunham Building in this beautiful Clevedon home, installing 190x15mm engineered European oak, and finishing the look with Clear Ciranova Oil.

The clear oil keeps the finish natural, with no added tone or heavy sheen. Instead, the grain, variation and warmth of the oak remain the focus.

Engineered oak gives you the look and feel of solid timber, with a genuine hardwood layer over a stable engineered core. This construction provides greater stability through seasonal changes and stands up well to everyday life, while still allowing the floor to be sanded and recoated in the future.

Taking advantage of the old and bringing it into the new.

This Grey Lynn villa already had original kauri flooring, so the brief was to continue it through the extended new kitchen and dining area. Working alongside Craig from Craig Ion Builders, the floor level was raised to match before the new kauri flooring was laid and carefully stitched into the existing timber, creating a consistent flow throughout the space.

Matching the existing floor allows the homeowners to retain an important part of the villa’s history and extend it through the home, without needing to replace the entire floor.

Our team is now sanding it back to bring out the natural grain and tone before the final coating is applied.

The results are in and we're excited to share that our "The Research Agency" project has been named Interior of the Year 2026 by HOME New Zealand
