.seien is a traditional Kyoto townhouse-style building called a “Machiya” which our master carpenter built before he moved to New Zealand.
The architecture combines Japanese elegance with practical design for both living and business.
The building features
A narrow frontage and deep interior space which is typical of old Kyoto merchant houses.
Wooden lattice windows called “Koshi”,allowing light and airflow while maintaining privacy.
Natural materials such as timber painted by “Bengara”,clay walls plastered “Shi-kui”,and traditional roof tiles.
A calm and refined atmosphere that reflects the cultural and history of KYOTO.
The interior preserves many classic Japanese architectural details,creating a nostalgic and authentic experience for visitors.
Because of its historical appearance and traditional craftsmanship,the building itself is considered part of Kyoto’s cultural heritage.
“Bengara” is a traditional Japanese red-brown pigment made from iron oxide.
It has been used for centuries in Japanese architecture and furniture because of its warm earthy color, durability, and natural appearance.
"Shikkui" is a traditional Japanese plaster made mainly from natural lime.
It has been used for centuries on walls and storehouses in Japan because of its smooth texture, durability, and natural appearance.
