How can architecture scale sustainability while staying rooted in culture and place?
🌍 Meet Kai-Uwe Bergman , FAIA – Partner at BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), where he leads global business development and oversees urban and landscape projects across 40+ countries.
He contributed to the iconic BIG U resilience plan for Manhattan and has led major projects like the Smithsonian Master Plan, Reimagining Brooklyn Bridge, and Brooklyn Queens Park. Kai-Uwe is also Partner-in-Charge of the Gelephu Mindfulness City—a visionary, timber-based economic and cultural hub in Bhutan grounded in Gross National Happiness.
At GSS25 Nepal, Kai-Uwe Bergmann will share how BIG’s global practice merges ecological thinking, resilient design, and cultural context to shape the architecture of tomorrow—highlighting the Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan as a model where vernacular architecture, rational woodcraft, and digital fabrication converge to position timber as a future material, deeply rooted in culture, sustainability, and place.
