The recent flooding along the Afaha Ube & Tabernacle Road axis (Uyo Metropolis) is a reminder that urban flooding is not caused by rainfall alone. Factors such as drainage conditions, ongoing construction works, land-use changes, and waste management practices can all influence how water moves through our streets.
While long-term solutions require resilient infrastructure, sound environmental planning, and regular drainage maintenance, there are practical steps residents can take to reduce flood risks and stay safe:
âś… Never dump refuse into drains or waterways
âś… Keep gutters and drainage channels around your home or business clear, especially before and during the rainy season.
âś… Avoid walking or driving through fast-moving floodwater.
âś… If floodwater has entered your home, switch off electricity at the main source before entering any flooded area, if it is safe to do so.
âś… Move important documents, electrical appliances, and valuables to higher ground whenever flooding is anticipated.
Flood resilience is a shared responsibility. Every clean drain, every properly managed waste stream, and every informed decision contributes to a safer and more resilient community.
Together, we can reduce flood risks
