WHY COLUMNS FAIL IN BUILDINGS (A STRUCTURAL EXPLANATION)

Columns are critical structural members designed to safely transfer loads from the building to the foundation. When they fail, it is rarely accidental; it is usually the result of technical compromises.
From a structural standpoint:

1. Poor Structural Design
Every column is designed based on calculated loads. If these calculations are wrong or assumptions are inaccurate, the column is already under-designed. This means the applied load exceeds its capacity, leading to crushing or instability over time.

2. Wrong Reinforcement Detailing
Steel reinforcement provides tensile strength and confinement to the concrete. When bars are undersized, poorly spaced, or improperly placed, the column cannot effectively resist stress. This leads to cracking, reduced ductility, and eventual failure.

3. Overloading
Columns are designed for specific load limits. Adding extra floors, heavier finishes, or unplanned structural changes introduces loads beyond capacity. Structurally, this results in overstressing, which accelerates failure.

4. Substandard Materials
Design assumes specific concrete strength and steel grade. If inferior materials are used, the actual strength is far below design expectations. This creates a dangerous mismatch between assumed and real performance.

Let’s talk about Block vs Brick from a realistic Nigerian perspective.

While bricks are stronger and more durable in theory, sandcrete blocks remain the more practical choice here; and it’s not just about cost.

First, thermal performance:
In our hot climate, sandcrete blocks tend to perform better in reducing heat transfer into the building compared to dense fired bricks.

Second, production energy:
Bricks require kiln firing at high temperatures, which is energy-intensive. Sandcrete blocks are cured naturally, making them more accessible and scalable locally.

Third, labour advantage:
You will find skilled block layers almost everywhere. Bricklaying, on the other hand, requires more specialized skill; which is less common.

Fourth, availability:
Blocks are readily available in almost every part of Nigeria. This reduces delays and logistics stress.

Now here’s the real issue:
Most problems people blame on “blocks” actually come from poor-quality blocks and lack of supervision.
A well-produced, properly laid block wall will always outperform a poorly executed alternative.

Most people focus on paint, tiles, and finishing.
But the real strength of any building is hidden underground.

Thinking about my time on various sites reminded me of how many issues come from simple foundation mistakes like:
▪️Poor soil assessment
▪️Weak materials and wrong concrete mix.
▪️Rushed work without supervision

The painful part?
By the time problems show, it’s already too late.

Whether you’re building or planning to, don’t ignore the foundation.

Your Building Is Only as Strong as What You Don’t See

After decades in structural engineering, one truth remains constant: the most critical elements of any building are hidden beneath the ground.
Before a single block is laid, the conversation must begin with a proper soil investigation. A detailed Geotechnical Investigation is not optional; it is the foundation of informed design. Through tests such as the Standard Pe*******on Test and laboratory analysis, we determine key parameters like bearing capacity, settlement characteristics, and soil stratification.
Designing blindly without this data is not just poor practice; it is a structural risk.
Once soil properties are established, the next step is selecting the appropriate foundation system. This is where engineering judgment meets data:
Shallow foundations (pad footings, strip footings, raft foundations) are suitable where competent bearing strata exist near the surface.
Deep foundations (piles, drilled shafts) become necessary when surface soils are weak or highly compressible, transferring loads to deeper, more stable layers.
Every structure interacts uniquely with the ground it sits on. Ignoring this interaction leads to differential settlement, cracking, and, in severe cases, structural failure.
A “good” design may optimize cost.
A “great” design ensures performance, durability, and safety over the structure’s lifespan.
As professionals, we must consistently emphasize this to clients and developers:
Cutting corners below ground will always manifest above ground.
Ask your engineer the right questions:
Has a soil test been conducted?
What is the allowable bearing capacity?
Why was this foundation type selected?
Because in the end, structural integrity is not defined by what is visible; it is secured by what is not.
