Goodluck Jonathan borrowed with subsidy in place 2010–2015 = ₦12.60trn

Late Muhammadu Buhari borrowed with subsidy in place. 2015–2023= ₦87.38trn

Bola Ames Tinubu borrowed with a subsidy removed.
2023–Mar. 2026 = ₦159.35trn

If Nigerians have endured the removal of subsidy, while the government says it saved ₦15.8 trillion, why is Nigeria's public debt still rising hugely?

A SIMPLE BUT HONEST ADVICE TO HIS EXCELLENCY,
Sir Siminalayi Fubara,
EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR of RIVERS STATE

Your Excellency, first, we sincerely appreciate you. We acknowledge and applaud your calm disposition and your consistent efforts at maintaining peace during these very difficult moments in Rivers State. In times like this, restraint and maturity matter, and on that score, you have shown leadership.

That said, because we genuinely care about your leadership and the future of this state, we must speak the truth—respectfully but honestly.

Your Excellency, you are struggling politically, and whether you realize it or not, it is becoming increasingly obvious. In politics, communication is power, and unfortunately, your communication machinery has failed you. Your media team and information handlers, including those around the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, operate largely on the defensive. They react instead of shaping narratives. In modern politics, that is a costly mistake. Politics rewards proactive communication, not delayed explanations.

Secondly, sir, many of those parading themselves as your loyal supporters are not truly invested in your success or survival. A good number are only close to power for what they can personally gain. Resources meant for the grassroots and genuine supporters rarely get there. Worse still, many of those around you today do not have the political capacity to win a polling unit, not to talk of a ward or a local government. Your Excellency, you must urgently reassess and restructure your inner circle.

Thirdly, if you truly intend to remain governor and emerge stronger from this political crisis, then your approach must change. No leader succeeds alone. There are countless strategic ways to win political battles in Rivers State, and you certainly have the capacity to do so—but strategy matters. Politics is built on structure. You cannot govern effectively, or survive politically, without strong grassroots structures. Even opposition parties understand this.

Government is local. Power is local. Sir, instead of excessive focus on Abuja, return home and fix Rivers State politically—ward by ward, LGA by LGA. Build loyal structures, empower real stakeholders, and reconnect with the base.

Finally, Your Excellency, surround yourself with credible, courageous, and strategic advisers—not praise-singers. Be willing to take decisive actions. Leadership sometimes demands tough decisions, especially in moments like this.

This advice comes not from hatred, but from concern and belief that you can still correct the course and lead Rivers State successfully.

Respectfully.

LAW-MAKING IS NOT A CIRCUS: A CONSTITUTIONAL REBUKE TO THE RIVERS STATE LEGISLATURE

The Legislature of Rivers State must be reminded—firmly and without apology—that its constitutional mandate is law-making, not endless political warfare.
The 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) is clear: legislative power exists to promote peace, order, and good governance. Nowhere does the Constitution suggest that impeachment theatrics should replace the serious business of making laws for the people.

Section 4 of the Constitution vests legislative powers in the House of Assembly to make laws for the peace, order, and good government of the State.
This is not optional. It is a duty. Yet, what the people of Rivers State currently witness is a legislature more obsessed with power tussles than with policies that address unemployment, insecurity, inflation, decaying infrastructure, and the worsening cost of living.

Impeachment is a constitutional tool—not a political hobby. Section 188 of the Constitution provides a strict, sober, and exceptional process for removing an executive officer in cases of gross misconduct. It was never designed to be weaponized for political intimidation, vendetta, or relevance-seeking. When impeachment becomes the loudest legislative activity, it signals a failure of leadership and a betrayal of public trust.

Lawmakers are representatives, not political warlords. Civic responsibility demands that elected officials place the collective welfare of the people above factional loyalty. The people did not vote for lawmakers to turn the House of Assembly into a battlefield; they voted for solutions—laws that create jobs, protect businesses, improve education, strengthen healthcare, and secure lives and property.

A legislature that neglects bills, public hearings, and oversight functions while prioritizing impeachment plots is in constitutional default. It is a dereliction of duty. Democracy is not sustained by chaos, but by responsible governance, dialogue, and service. When lawmakers abandon these principles, they weaken democratic institutions and endanger the very system that gave them power.

Let it be stated plainly: History will judge this Assembly not by how aggressively it pursued impeachment, but by how effectively it served the people. Power is temporary. Records are permanent. The citizens of Rivers State are watching, and civic awareness is rising.

This is a call—not for silence, not for submission—but for legislative sanity. The Rivers State House of Assembly must return to its constitutional role. Law-making is far more than impeachment. It is about responsibility, restraint, and an unwavering commitment to the common good.

Anything less is a betrayal of the Constitution and an insult to the people.

Since the Governor of Rivers State Sir Siminalayi Fubara defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), one important step that many party faithful expected was a State APC stakeholders’ meeting.
Such a meeting would have given him the opportunity to clearly identify those who are genuinely loyal to the party and build a strong, inclusive strategy around them.

Leadership thrives on wide consultation. Relying mainly on a single support structure, especially one driven by access to state resources rather than genuine loyalty, can be limiting.

Sadly, it appears that some of those closest to him are not offering the honest and strategic advice needed at this critical time. In fact, I can confidently say that more than half of his advisers are not telling him the hard truths leadership requires.

A well-structured APC stakeholders’ meeting would have strengthened unity, deepened trust, and further solidified his leadership within the party and across the state.

That said, leadership is a journey, and there is always room to recalibrate. I sincerely wish him wisdom and success as he continues to lead Rivers State forward.
