What do you fix your eyes on? There is something dangerous about constantly trying to connect dots: when you are determined to find a pattern, you will always find a dot to connect. Someone doesn't greet you, you assume they dislike you. Your boss gives someone else an opportunity, you conclude they don't value you. You are given more responsibility, you decide you are being used. Before long, you are no longer responding to reality; you are responding to the story your gaze has created.

Sometimes, we become so obsessed with proving that we are being used that we forget something uncomfortable: you can only be used for as long as you are useful. Not every demand is exploitation. Not every correction is hatred. Not every opportunity given to someone else is an attack on you. Sometimes, what you call being "used" is actually an opportunity to become more competent, more valuable and more prepared for the next level.

Today's energy was on a whole different level. After the birthday Party of our boss on Saturday which we haven't recovered from, we took on the gratitude.

Team members showed up with fresh zeal and passion which made the atmosphere an amazing one. To crown it all, we had breakfast together.

What do you fix your eyes on? There is something dangerous about constantly trying to connect dots: when you are determined to find a pattern, you will always find a dot to connect. Someone doesn't greet you, you assume they dislike you. Your boss gives someone else an opportunity, you conclude they don't value you. You are given more responsibility, you decide you are being used. Before long, you are no longer responding to reality; you are responding to the story your gaze has created.

Think about Joseph. His brothers sold him, he was falsely accused and he ended up in prison. He had enough reasons to stare at injustice and build his identity around what had been done to him. But Joseph kept becoming useful wherever he found himself. He didn't allow a bad environment to produce a stagnant man. His circumstances changed, but more importantly, he refused to let his gaze remain trapped in his circumstances.

This is why your gaze matters, especially at work. If you keep staring at who is getting recognition, you may stop developing yourself. If you keep watching office politics, you may become an expert at complaining but a novice at growing. The wrong gaze can stagnate you. So ask yourself: What am I learning? What am I becoming? What value am I building? Life will always give you dots. You don't have to connect every one of them into a story of persecution. Sometimes, you simply need to change your gaze.
