Knowing yourself means understanding who you are, what you like and dislike, your strengths and weaknesses, and what’s important to you. We go through life, constantly chasing things like money, prestige, comfort, pleasure. In that chase, we typically neglect or forget our inner self, who we're, and what it may truly need. It’s about being aware of your thoughts, feelings, and motivations, which helps you make better choices and live a more authentic and fulfilling life.
What you do when you're alone is the most important aspect of your self-discovery. To know yourself, you have to be aware of yourself. Every thought, action, or emotion is an indication of some part of yourself. Knowing yourself improves your confidence and well-being and helps you respect yourself and set clear boundaries.
We experience life transitions and changes in our roles. Experience like marriage, divorce, retirement, job loss, death of a loved one, or other traumatic events can also result in losing our sense of self, especially the parts associated with our roles. We feel ashamed and unworthy, and consequently bury parts of ourselves. You were told that you’re bad, strange, ugly, stupid, or unworthy. You were criticized or teased. But...... What do you fear? What makes you happy? What are your insecurities? What are your defense mechanisms? After years of doing this, we lose track of who we really are.
For every situation you find yourself, no matter how big or small, ask yourself why. The goal is not to criticise yourself. It’s to recognise the different parts of yourself, both the good and the bad. That’s why it’s important that you are honest and willing to open yourself up to whatever you may learn. The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.
Life is hard whether you like it or not. Don’t make it harder for yourself. The truth is that life will happen, both in its good and its bad, but how you react is what truly matters. To ensure you make the right decision, figure out who you are because it’s usually a lack of knowledge that leads to misfortune. When you know yourself, life becomes easier to a certain extent.
The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation through choice of action. It is useful to know ourselves so much that we can begin to predict what we will do because knowing how we react to things can help us alter our reactions or at least be more intentional. The most difficult secret to keep for yourself is your own honest opinion of yourself.
Knowledge is power. Knowing yourself is strength. Knowing yourself brings confidence and authenticity. Just like with people, you must first know yourself to be able to trust and love yourself. If you want a healthy, happy life, you must first know yourself. If you want to be strong, free, and authentic, you must first know yourself.
Remember that God loves you so learn to appreciate yourself.
