This is the concept that separates GIS beginners from people who actually know what they are doing.
All spatial data falls into two types: vector or raster. Vector uses points, lines, and polygons for features with clear boundaries. Raster uses a grid of cells for continuous data like elevation, temperature, and satellite imagery. Neither is better. They solve different problems.
The real skill is knowing which one to reach for and when.

Most people think GIS is just a map. It’s not even close.
A GIS system is made up of five interconnected components: hardware, software, data, people, and methods. All working together to capture, store, analyze, and visualize spatial information about the real world. Remove any one of those components and the entire system breaks down.
This is the architecture behind every flood warning system, every delivery route, every climate model, and every urban plan on Earth. And most people have never seen it broken down like this.
