Many people do not realize that about 60% of what determines who they may become in life is not directly decided by them.

You did not choose your family.
You did not choose your father or mother.
You did not choose the country, state, town, or village where you were born.

Even the name given to you was not your decision, yet names can influence perception, identity, and sometimes opportunities in life.

You did not choose whether to be born male or female.
You did not choose the religion you were introduced to as a child. Most people practice a religion today because it was the belief system their parents exposed them to from birth.

Yes, some people later change their religion, mindset, or even their names as they grow older and gain understanding. But many still remain where they are simply because that was all they were taught to believe from childhood.

If you understand these realities early in life, especially at a young age, you will begin to separate the things you can control from the things you cannot control.

Some people are born into environments that already place them at an advantage. Others are born into situations that place them at a disadvantage from the beginning.

Some people start life at plus ten.
Some start at minus ten.

For someone starting at minus ten, reaching even zero may require years of struggle, discipline, sacrifice, and effort before moving toward plus ten.

That is why people's journeys are not the same.

If situations were reversed, some people who are struggling today may have performed far better if they had been born into different conditions, opportunities, or support systems.

But understanding disadvantage is not an excuse for failure.

What it means is this:

While others can afford to sleep comfortably for eight hours, you may need to sacrifice more time, work harder, learn faster, and stay more disciplined because of the disadvantages around you.

Think deeply about these things.
Make adjustments early.

Not everybody in life started from the same point.

Back in school, we all knew some students who already had jobs waiting for them after graduation because of family connections, influence, or opportunities available to them.

Some only needed to collect their certificate and resume work immediately.

But for some of us who had nobody to rely on, we knew we had to study harder, get better grades, develop competence, and prepare ourselves properly because we needed those qualifications to create opportunities for ourselves.

We knew we had to convince employers before they would even invite us for an interview. Then after getting the opportunity, we still had to prove that we truly knew what we were doing.

So wherever you find yourself in life, understand this:

Maybe 60% of your starting condition was not your choice.
But what you do with the remaining 40% may eventually determine what becomes of your life.

Think about it carefully.

Apply wisdom where necessary.
Use common sense where necessary.
But most importantly, start making the right adjustments early in life.

ADVICE FOR CLIENTS CONSIDERING A BUILDING PROJECT.

This is the perfect time to advise clients who are looking to start a building project to carefully assess their costs. Having twenty million Naira in your account does not necessarily mean you can construct a ten-story building.

Before you begin, it's crucial to start with working drawings. After that, consult a quantity surveyor to verify the costs, ensuring you include a contingency for potential increases in building material prices and other issues that may arise. Understanding the total cost to move from one stage of construction to another is essential.

I dislike seeing ten-story buildings halted at the fifth floor and left abandoned. Such situations expose the structure to rain, water damage, and ultimately compromise its stability and strength. Too much exposure of a building to weather decreases its stability.

If your plans include building three floors, and your quantity surveyor's cost analysis indicates that your budget can only cover two floors and a roof, it’s wise to reassess your project scope. Focus on what your budget can realistically support rather than starting with the intention to complete everything, only to find yourself stuck along the line.

Value your funds. I've seen many clients invest heavily in foundations only to stop partway through the project, which is not good at all.

Many believe that simply having fifty million Naira is sufficient to complete a project without fully accounting for costs. The best approach is to assess your expenses to determine whether you should even begin.

Just as you would price items during window shopping, consulting a quantity surveyor can provide valuable insights into the expected costs for your project.

Avoid the impulse to start construction without planning. The Bible advises us to count the cost before embarking on any project; having a clear understanding of potential expenses is essential.

Do not initiate a project only to halt it midway and waste resources. If your funds are insufficient, consider using them for business investments until you have enough to start your building project.

Even if you plan to construct in stages, knowing the costs will help you understand how much you need for the foundation, as well as for completing the first floor. This planning will guide you effectively, rather than starting without a clear direction.

My message this morning, as Woli the Great Builder, is to sit back and assess your costs before embarking on your project.

It will lead to success!

Shalom!

Artur Fischer, a German inventor, is known for inventing the plastic dowel, also known as the "Fischer dowel", in 1958. This small invention revolutionized the construction industry by providing a simple and effective solution for attaching objects to walls made of concrete, brick or other solid materials.

The Fischer dowel consists of a small plastic cylinder with wings on the outside that expand when inserted into a drilled hole in the wall. This creates a firm and secure anchor for screws, nails or any other type of fastening.

This innovation has changed the home improvement and construction industry forever by making it much easier and safer to attach objects to walls. Fischer also has numerous other inventions and patents that underline his role as one of the most important German inventors of the 20th century.

Yesterday, we spoke about foundation settlement and how it affects our buildings.

Today, we’ll delve deeper into SOIL COMPACTION and see how it can cause foundation settlement.

Soil compaction simply means compressing the soil used to fill your foundation to create a denser layer (rock-like) platform for the building to sit on. It occurs when soil particles are pressed together to reduce the air space between them.
The common term used is “FILLING.” The act of pouring sand into the foundation to create a smooth surface for oversite concrete/ floor casting.
The purpose of soil compaction is so the soil can support the building. If there’s anything you want, it’s solid ground that can carry the load of your building.

Soil compaction is like pregnancy, whether you conceal it or not, it’ll manifest.
Many people after filling their foundation, rush to do oversite concrete without ensuring proper soil compaction. If you don’t compact the soil, what will happen is that, a hollow layer will be created between the soil and the building, and this will cause foundation settlement.
That’s the reason behind cracks in walls, tiles removal, titled doors and windows, making it difficult to freely open and close, cracked slabs etc.

We can demonstrate this by fetching sand of equal volumes into two separate containers.

✅ When you press down the sand in container A,🫙 you’ll observe the level will decrease. If you want the container full, you’ll have to top up with more sand. You’ll repeat this process until the container can’t take anymore sand. The soil becomes dense and hard. This is the point where you can say the soil is properly compacted, and can hold the weight of the structure.

✅ However, in the second container 🫙, you’ll equally observe that the container is full. Nonetheless, if you put any item of significant weight into it, you’ll notice the object will sink.
The essence is that, the soil in container B isn’t compacted; it has a lot of air and pores in them, making it less dense, and more prone to foundation settlement. Water can easily pass through it, and you know what will happen.
You don’t want water to compromise anything under your home and cause damage.
It is the same story with building on poorly compacted soil.

The whole point is to make the soils dense so water doesn’t break in or navigate through and cause erosion.

How do I ensure proper soil compaction?
1. If you’re not in a hurry to complete your project, then leave your foundation to settle by itself. When you do the filling, allow time to pass, and let rain and sun do the magic.
Do you realize that when you fill your foundation to the brim, and it rains over time, the filling drops, and you’ll have to top up again and again? Yes! That’s the natural way of ensuring proper compaction.

2. If you’re in a hurry to complete the project, there are compaction machines available. Hire one and use it. The practice where your mason lifts blocks and drops them hard on the filling won’t achieve any desired results. Others will join pieces of wooden boards and pound the soil like fufu. I’m sorry that’s just on the surface. Do the right thing.
