Today, while I was sitting in my small shop, praying and trusting God for miraculous sales, a woman walked in carrying her baby.
She looked at me and said,
"Please, I'm not begging for money. Could you please buy me food so I can have the strength to breastfeed my baby?"
Her words touched me deeply.
I told her I don't sell food or groceries, and that even if she wasn't asking for cash, I would still have to spend money to get food for her.
So I decided to ask her a few questions.
She said she lives in Apete. When I asked about her husband, she explained that he used to travel with trailers to Lagos, but she hasn't heard from him since she was heavily pregnant.
I asked how old her baby was.
She replied, "Just 25 days old."
She said she could no longer bear the hunger, which was why she came out to ask for food. Before giving birth, she sold pepper in front of her rented apartment, but everything she had was spent on delivery and other baby-related expenses.
She even tried to collect sachet water on credit from some traders so she could sell and repay them later, but they refused because they didn't know or trust her.
Then she said something that stayed with me:
"If I can just get ₦1,000 to start selling again, I'll make good use of it."
I gave her ₦500 to buy something to eat and asked her to come back on Wednesday.
To be honest, I wish I had ₦30,000 to ₦50,000 to give her so she could restart her pepper business. But like many others, I'm also trusting God and doing my best with what I have.
This is why I'm appealing to anyone with a kind heart.
Let's come together and surprise this woman when she returns on Wednesday. Instead of giving her temporary relief, let's help her get back on her feet by raising enough money for her to restart her small business.
