In a move to end the blackouts that have long weighed on households, businesses and industry, I joined His Excellency Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, and the leadership of the Ministry at Lagos House, Marina, with one goal: work in synergy to deliver stable, reliable electricity to the Lagos corridor, as part of the 24/7 Energy Zones pilot approved by President Bola Tinubu.

The 24/7 Energy Zones pilot will start in Lagos and extend to the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors, giving it a path to scale across Nigeria's major commercial and industrial hubs. To turn this commitment into delivery, we set up a Joint Technical Committee to drive the work, reporting to a Steering Committee chaired by the Governor and co-chaired by me.

Thank you, Governor Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos State Government, for your partnership. Together, we are working to end the culture of blackouts.

The Honourable Minister broke ground on the new ultra-modern National Control Centre in Osogbo for the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), replacing a 64-year-old facility that no longer meets the demands of running Nigeria's grid.

This is a concrete expression of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's determination to fix the underlying weaknesses in electricity supply. Once commissioned, the centre will give NISO integrated SCADA, large-format displays and analytics to spot developing faults, plan preventive maintenance and make better use of existing generation and transmission capacity. It will also improve responses to disturbances, support renewable energy integration and strengthen Nigeria's coordination within the West African Power Pool.

For Nigerians, the expected payoff is fewer avoidable outages and a more dependable supply. Delivering that also depends on adequate gas feedstock, well-maintained transmission equipment and distribution networks that reach end users, and this centre strengthens the coordination that ties them together.

Our thanks to Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON, for the support, and to the NISO Board and Management, the Osun State Government and our partners.

The Honourable Minister held a strategic closed-door meeting with the leadership of select electricity distribution companies on the proposed 24/7 Energy Zones.

The goal is clear: stable, 24-hour power for homes, businesses and industries in our highest-demand areas, starting with the Abuja axis, Lagos axis, Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors.

Our challenge is not limited to generation and transmission but also includes how much power is taken up and delivered at the distribution end. The Energy Zones are designed to close that gap, unlock commercial and industrial demand, and strengthen the sector's finances.

We are also building up infrastructure in high-demand areas so that supply keeps pace with the needs of a growing economy. This is in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which places reliable energy at the centre of economic growth, industrialisation and job creation.

The Honourable Minister commissioned a 581 kWp interconnected solar mini-grid with 1.4 MW battery storage in Oke-Oyi, Kwara State, delivering more reliable electricity to about 1,800 households and businesses.

Delivered under the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS), with support from the European Union, Germany through GIZ, UNICEF and other partners, the project demonstrates how strong partnerships can mobilise private investment and expand sustainable energy access.

The mini grid which is set to power 1,800 businesses and households, adds to a growing portfolio of rural and off-grid electrification projects delivered under the Renewed Hope Agenda, as we continue to expand access, strengthen energy security, and advance Nigeria's transition toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

Beyond electricity, this project also means more productive businesses, greater opportunities for young people, improved livelihoods, and a stronger local economy.

As we , we remain committed to building a more reliable, sustainable and inclusive power sector.

POWERING PROGRESS: THE FIRST 100 DAYS

Three months ago, I took on the responsibility of serving as Minister of Power. I promised disciplined ex*****on, grid stability through real reform, visible improvement, and honest communication.

We spent much of this period on diagnosis and repair; restoring the 375MW Alaoji plant after three years offline, unlocking transmission capacity in Lagos, Abuja and other places, mobilising funds toward a debt burden that has quietly undermined this sector for years, and deploying over 350,000 meters enabled by our pragmatic resolution of the legal quagmire with AMMON.

Admittedly, many Nigerians are still without reliable power, and I understand the frustration of hearing about progress you haven't personally felt yet. I'm not going to pretend that away. Fixing this sector properly takes time, and I will not promise a quick fix that doesn't hold.

To be clear: there's no plan to raise tariffs and this is no political statement. I will continue to acknowledge what's working and what is yet to. I restate my commitment to grid stability, supply reliability, billing accuracy, faster resolution of complaints; with no shortcuts.

My gratitude to the team working under difficult conditions, and for Nigerians willing to stay engaged with us on this. We're not there yet, but we're moving.

The Honourable Minister commissioned a 3MW solar hybrid power plant at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja and with it, 58,726 students and staff now have reliable, cleaner electricity, and the university no longer has to depend on diesel generators.

The facility combines a 3.3MWp solar array, 3MW of AC output capacity and 2MWh of battery storage, backed by grid supply outside solar hours. Beyond the classrooms and laboratories, 388 new streetlights are already improving safety across campus.

This project; delivered by the Rural Electrification Agency under Phase II of the Energizing Education Programme, with support from the World Bank, is what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda looks like in practice: power that protects institutions already built, and strengthens the graduates and research that will shape our future.

Special thanks to the REA Board under Mr Ayodele Fayose, REA Management under Mr Abba Abubakar Aliyu, and the leadership of Yakubu Gowon University for their partnership.

To our students: this investment is yours to protect. Please report any vandalism of power infrastructure and help us keep the lights on.

The Honourable Minister led a delegation from the Ministry of Power on a courtesy visit to the EFCC Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, in Abuja, to strengthen collaboration on vandalism, energy theft and revenue protection.

The EFCC highlighted significant results over the last 34 months, including over ₦1 trillion in cash recoveries, 10,000+ convictions and 10,000+ non-cash assets recovered.

We sought the EFCC’s immediate support in prosecuting power infrastructure vandalism and persistent energy theft offenders, including the recovery of outstanding revenue.

We also discussed applying some recovered funds from relevant contractor cases towards addressing military metering needs, subject to the necessary processes.

To drive implementation, we agreed to establish an EFCC–Ministry of Power Technical Working Group, alongside stronger fraud controls and monitoring of power-sector projects.

I appreciate the EFCC for its continued support, including its intervention in resolving contractor-related issues concerning the Kudenda Power Plant in Kaduna State.

During our working visit to Beijing to engage original equipment manufacturers and technical partners of the Presidential Power Initiative, the Honourable Minister met with TBEA, one of China's leading power and energy equipment manufacturers, at their headquarters. The outcome is a commitment to establish a power and energy equipment industrial park in Nigeria.

This matters because Nigeria has long been a net importer of power-sector equipment. This park changes that calculus, positioning us as a manufacturing and export hub, building indigenous supplier capacity, and creating jobs in the process. I see TBEA as a long-term strategic development partner, not simply a contractor, and that distinction matters. Our investment thesis is clear: we want capital that comes with technology transfer and local capacity-building attached.

Alongside the new park, TBEA renewed its commitment to accelerate delivery of ongoing transmission and distribution projects across Nigeria, work expected to unlock over 2,000MW of stranded capacity and strengthen bulk power supply to the Federal Capital Territory. I used the engagement to press for faster completion of Presidential Power Initiative works and to advocate for extending planned grid infrastructure to the East-West corridor. Contracted, substantially developed projects need to reach completion, that's where value for Nigerians actually materializes.

We also opened discussions on the feasibility of electric-vehicle charging infrastructure, a new investment frontier as our grid modernizes around renewable energy and storage.

Taken together, these outcomes reflect a broader shift underway in Nigeria's power sector: from importing equipment to building it. From stranded capacity to power that reaches homes and industries. From short-term contracts to lasting partnerships.

The goal is simple, and urgent: a power sector capable of supporting Nigeria's industrialization and sustained economic growth.

As part of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), I led our delegation, alongside the Managing Director of FGN Power Company, Mr. Kenny Anuwe, where we visited Hengfei Cable’s Changsha Industrial Park to conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) on cables, transformers and related equipment for deployment in Nigeria.

The exercise focused on quality assurance, technical compliance (to specifications) and verification of equipment before shipment.

For Nigeria’s power sector, reliability starts at the factory where the equipment is manufactured. Every piece of equipment must meet the required standards before it leaves the production line.

Building a stronger and more reliable power network begins with getting the fundamentals right.
