Njira Zake Farm

Njira Zake Farm We are building an agroforestry farm where trees alongside cash crops, are being planted for fertilization, pest control, food, and farming use.

We have set aside 0.5 acres of dambo land for biodiversity, ecosystem restoration, and water conservation.

The hardest part about using urine fertilizer is finding enough of it in the first place!

HUMAN URINE AS A FERTILISER, WHAT YOU MUST KNOW

At Njira Zake Farm, we have tested urine as a fertilizer in three trials, and results were exciting!

🌱 Our Trials:
A: Urine + compost tea (chicken manure, leaves)
B: Urine only
C: Compost followed by urine

A & B performed better than C! 🎉

đź’ˇ What You Need to Know:
A. Urine needs time: Let it age for at least 7 days (preferably 21 days) to avoid toxicity.
Use gloves and masks for safety.

B. Avoid using female urine for tomatoes—it can interfere with flowering. Maize is fine.

C. Dilution is key: Adjust based on soil, season, and compost:
1. Rainy season: 1 part urine to 2 parts water for well-composted soil.
2. Dry season: 1 part urine to 4 parts water for highly draining soils.
3. Poorly draining soils: Use a high dilution of 1 part urine to 6–8 parts water to prevent root burn.

D. Seed Boost: Soak seeds in diluted urine for 2-4 hours before planting to promote germination.

Avoid salt buildup: Never use urine alone! Combine with rich compost for best results.

Safety first: Keep urine fertilizers away from children and livestock. ⚠️

👉 Urine Fertilizer = Liquid Gold if used right! 🌾 But always be cautious—use with care, and reap the rewards! 🌟

Watering transplanted trees is essential in agroforestry systems.
However, in our case we are prioritizing rapid wind breaks. It appears we should be secure in the next two years at this pace.

Cheers to our Female Employee for the excellent watering work and that fertilise them.

WETLANDS: Nature’s Answer to Both Droughts and Floods

"Drought and floods are two sides of the crisis. Wetlands can fix both."
– Retno Marsudi & Musonda Mumba ( UN Environment Programme, https://africarenewal.un.org/en/magazine/floods-and-droughts-are-two-sides-same-crisis)

At Njira Zake Farm, our dream to restore our 0.5-acre wetland (dambo) is more than a project—it's a call to action for "ecosystem restoration", "water conservation", and "biodiversity protection".

This May, we are completing the planting of:

- Reeds for natural filtration
- Bananas (not for consumption) for water retention
- Preparing for the transplanting of Msangu and Syzygium cordatum—native trees once lost to deforestation.

We believe wetlands are living systems that heal land, cool climates, and support life.

Let’s restore wetlands. Let’s restore balance.

*Farming is more than growing food—it’s growing you*
It’s a life skill, a mindset, and a journey of personal transformation.

1. Feeling impatient? Try farming. It teaches you to wait, trust the process, and respect time.

2. Tend to give up or leave things unfinished? Plant something. You’ll learn the power of redoing, restarting, and rebuilding.

3. Struggle with strategy or creativity? The land will push you to think differently—and reward innovation.

**Every germination success brings joy—but it’s also a call to manage, nurture, and persevere.

It’s easy to celebrate when seeds sprout or transplants thrive in new ground—but true growth lies in consistent care, even when faced with harsh weather or the unexpected.
That’s where farming teaches you emotional intelligence—to stay calm, adapt, and lead through uncertainty.

Did You Know?
Masache, known scientifically as Sida acuta, is a resilient shrub that naturally grows across Malawi — but it can also be deliberately planted. Here are five quick facts:

Though it grows wild, Masache seeds can be harvested and planted intentionally.

It adapts to both poor and fertile soils, making it easy to manage.

In many Malawian homes, Masache is used to make strong sweeping brooms.

It also has traditional medicinal uses — for treating wounds, fevers, and stomach problems.

Masache survives dry conditions thanks to its deep root system.
