WW2 German Cavalry Horseshoe Servicing Wrench 🔧🐎

Based on the deep rust pitting, it was most likely dug up with a metal detector! I identified it as a WW2-era German cavalry horseshoe servicing wrench, made by Eugen Zerver Remscheid (ZEREM). It is stamped No. H-32. It was used by soldiers to clean horse hooves, re-tap threads, and screw in winter calks to stop horses from slipping.

Flea market hunt paid off! 🛠️✨

I’ve been hunting for KNIPEX tools at flea markets for years. I finally found these in a scrap metal pile!

They were so incredibly rusty that it was impossible to identify them or see any brand markings.

I used electrolysis to clear the rust, and look what emerged: a classic pair of KNIPEX pliers, stamped No. 02/160 MM and Made in Germany!

My wife and I visited the antique market at Piazza Santa Lucia in Syracuse, Sicily. It was interesting to see how markets operate in another country. You could tell that the sellers were regular people clearing out old items from their homes, rather than professional antique dealers. Unfortunately, there were almost no tools. I only managed to buy this unmarked spiral drill (Archimedes drill), but my wife found plenty of porcelain items and tasteful vintage decor pieces. Our suitcase is full!

Yesterday’s flea market run turned out to be an absolute jackpot! 🛠️✨ Here are the latest additions to my collection:

🔹 Imperial Era Wrench: A heavy-duty, double open-end wrench (5/16" x 3/8") with a Cyrillic "П" stamped inside a circle. Given its heft and imperial sizing, it’s highly likely a late Russian Empire piece—possibly connected to major industrial plants like Putilov or early Podolsk.

🔹 Vintage Lasting Pliers: Found two pairs of shoemaker’s pliers. The first is a robust Weydekamp Kettling & Co. No. 4. The second is a smaller pair marked H L.K. alongside the classic Swedish 3 Crowns (Tre Kronor) stamp. (You can check out a similar pair I restored back in my March posts!)

🔹 Archimedes Drill (Double Helix): While I already own several standard spiral models, this reciprocating double-helix mechanism is a first for my collection. A fascinating piece of mechanical history.

🔹 Stanley No. 10A: A classic, dependable Yankee ratchet screwdriver in great shape.

🔹 Veritas 10" Sliding Bevel: The crown jewel of this hunt! 💎 While not vintage, this premium Canadian layout tool was discontinued around 2015. Finding the longer, hard-to-find 10-inch version truly made my day.

Time to hit the workshop for some clean-up! 👋🔧

My latest flea market finds: a vintage steel wire draw plate by Koch & Co. (Elberfeld), an elegantly engraved German saw set, a Dauber Breslau multi- wrench, two small hammers that allegedly belonged to a jeweler, and a molding plane by the German maker Jos. Steiner & Söhne / Laupheimer Werkzeugfabrik (L.W.)

🇺🇲Historical find.

This vintage tool carries the stamp of "AD. KAHLERT RIGA", a prominent Latvian glass, mirror, and stained-glass manufacturer founded in 1900 by Adolf Kahlert.

During the 1920s and 30s, this Riga-based workshop was famous for high-end glass processing, mirror beveling, and intricate stained-glass craftsmanship. The historical records show that their factory was located at Martas iela 9, while their main store operated at Audēju iela 19, in the heart of Riga.

This specialized tool dates back to the interwar period (1920s-1930s), serving as a true piece of Riga's industrial and craftsmanship history. The handle is made of wooden material, painted black, and finished with a traditional, glossy shellac coating.

If you look closely, the handle also features a small embedded logo with the letters "U.&C." inside a circular seal. I am currently researching the exact origins and history behind this specific manufacturer's stamp, and I will definitely update the post as soon as I uncover more details. Stay tuned.

Šis senatnīgais darbarīks ir marķēts ar zīmogu "AD. KAHLERT RIGA", kas piederēja 1900. gadā Ādolfa Kālerta dibinātam Latvijas stikla, spoguļu un vitrāžu uzņēmumam. Starpkaru periodā šī Rīgas darbnīca bija slaveni stikla meistari. To fabrika atradās Martas ielā 9, bet veikals – Audēju ielā 19.

Pats instruments ir datējams ar 20. gadsimta 20.–30. gadiem. Tā koka rokturis ir nokrāsots melns un pārklāts ar tradicionālu šellaku. Uz roktura redzams arī mazs, mīklains zīmogs ar burtiem "U.&C.". Pašlaik vēl turpinu pētīt šī marķējuma izcelsmi, un noteikti papildināšu ierakstu, tiklīdz uzzināšu ko vairāk.

The ultimate highlight is definitely the Ulmia wooden plane—a rare gem around here, especially in this condition with the original iron.

Joined by a Stanley brace drill, Stanley no.199 knife, Südag square, Rabone mini level, glass cutter, and two vintage German saw sets. Keeping craftsmanship alive. 🪚

Spent the weekend exploring two massive flea markets and found some interesting tools. 🛠️ Managed to pick up several multi-wrenches, pliers, lasting pliers, two spokeshaves, and a hand plane by Jānis Lapsa (a maker's stamp I always look for at these markets). The heavy rust is currently hiding the marks, but I'll soon get to work removing the corrosion and bringing these tools back to life. Stay tuned!
