Project : Proposed Residence
Location : Bakamuna, Sri Lanka
Owner : Mr. Weerarathne
Floor area : 1650 sqft
The project is located on a constrained triangular site of approximately 6.5 perches, creating a key design challenge while maintaining all required functional spaces within a total floor area of about 1650 sqft, including an attic level and an open terrace oriented towards the paddy field at the rear.
The entry sequence is designed as a gradual spatial transition from the front compound into the house. A small verandah acts as a threshold space, allowing users to experience an intermediate zone between exterior and interior. Upon entry, a compact sitting area is introduced, designed to evoke a sense of relaxation through strong visual and spatial connections, both vertical and horizontal.
A double-height space enhances the spatial quality of the living area, while the upper attic volume projects into this space, strengthening the visual and architectural connectivity. This interplay of volumes creates a sense of openness and architectural experimentation through material expression and spatial layering.
Adjacent to the living area, the pantry and compact kitchen are arranged to support daily functionality. A small courtyard is integrated as a semi-private gathering and dining space, reflecting the user’s lifestyle and encouraging informal family interaction.
The private zone consists of two bedrooms sharing a common bathroom, efficiently planned to suit the compact site constraints while maintaining comfort and usability.
At the rear, the house opens directly towards the paddy field, establishing a strong visual and physical connection with nature. A set of natural steps provides access down to the landscape, reinforcing this relationship with the terrain.
The upper floor accommodates a multifunctional space intended for relaxation, reading, and study. This space extends towards a rear terrace through a verandah, enhancing cross-ventilation and openness.in the evening, this upper-level terrace becomes a key family space, offering a relaxed setting to enjoy the surrounding natural landscape, often accompanied by tea and informal conversations.
