느린 이야기.
작년 말, 김경찬 작가님의 작업실에서 처음 본 이 동그란 화병의 귀여움에 마음을 뺏겼습니다.
김경찬 작가님의 다양한 작업들을 오두제에서 조금씩 보여드릴 수 있는 계기가 되면 좋겠다는 마음으로 이 화병을 데려왔습니다.
올해 초에는 작가님의 여러 기물들을 기록하고 공유하기 위해 사진을 찍고, 오두제 매장 안 빛이 잘 드는 자리에 두었습니다.
그리고 올해 봄, 휴무일에 화원에 갔습니다. 제가 ‘메론’이라고 애칭을 붙인 이 화병에 어울릴 만한 식물을 하나 사주고 싶었습니다.
그때 고른 것이 동그란 잎을 가진 워터코인이었습니다.
처음에는 해가 잘 드는 창가에 두었습니다.
빛이 잘 들어 좋을 거라 생각했는데, 며칠 지나 잎이 조금씩 타들어가는 것이 보였습니다. 그래서 너무 강한 빛이 드는 자리가 아닌, 적당한 빛이 드는 자리로 옮겨주었습니다.
그 뒤로 귀여운 동그란 동전들은 다시 해가 드는 쪽으로 옹기종기 목을 내밀기 시작했습니다.
그리고 오늘,
처음 이 화병을 보고 “이 화병은 무척 귀엽다”라고 생각했던 저의 마음이
다섯 달쯤 지나, 대만에서 온 두 사람에게도 고스란히 전해졌습니다.
마음이 전해지기까지는 생각보다 여러 번의 손길이 필요한 것 같습니다.

A Slow Story.
Late last year, I first saw this round vase at ceramic artist Kim Kyungchan’s studio, and I was completely taken by its cuteness.
I brought it to ODUJEJ, hoping it could become a small beginning for introducing more of Kim Kyungchan’s work through our space.
Earlier this year, we photographed several of the artist’s pieces to record and share them, and placed this vase in a bright spot inside the ODUJEJ store.
Then this spring,
on one of our days off, I went to a plant shop.
I wanted to find a plant that would suit this vase, which I had nicknamed “Melon.”
What we chose was a water pennywort, with small round leaves.
At first, I placed it by the window where the sunlight came in well.
I thought the bright light would be good for it, but after a few days, I noticed the leaves beginning to burn little by little.
So I moved it to a place with gentler, more moderate light.
After that, the cute little round coins began to stretch their necks together toward the light again.
And today,
the feeling I had when I first saw this vase — “this vase is very cute” — was passed on, about five months later, to two people from Taiwan.
It seems that a feeling takes more small gestures than we expect before it can be passed on.
