We hope you will all consider joining us in celebration of the 33 chosen artists depicting the beauty of Cambodia.

Historically, landscape painting has always held an important role in Cambodian art. Bas-relief depictions of nature during the ancient Khmer empire were rich in symbology, and rooted in spiritual cosmology. And when one studies Khmer art history (often just a part of broader SE Asian Art History survey courses), the focus is almost always generally on the architectural and sculptural arts of the temples.

However, emerging prominently in the mid-20th century (1940's and 50's) through institutions like the Royal University of Fine Arts (previously The School of Cambodian Arts), generations of Khmer painters were finally allowed, and then diligently trained to depict the country’s rivers and waterfalls, rice fields, temples, and rural life with levels of high precision and regard. Even the exact placement of the skyline (lower 2/3rd) and the water buffalo was taught.

Artists such as Nhek Dim helped define this movement, creating works that balanced realism with emotive and cultural identity. Even today, landscape painting remains deeply embedded in Cambodian visual culture, reflecting both memory and place.
