Fact: Maison KN is a compact urban residence with a total built area of approximately 69 m², located within the historic core of Hanoi—one of the city's most densely built neighborhoods. The house was designed for two adult siblings who required a semi-independent living environment while remaining close to their family home. The project responds to the challenges of narrow alleyways, limited daylight, and poor ventilation that characterize many older districts of Hanoi.
A defining feature of the house is its pixelated façade, inspired by the irregular rooftop patterns visible from above in the surrounding neighborhood. Randomly arranged solid and void openings create distinctive visual frames from each floor while allowing natural light to pe*****te the interior. Rather than opening outward to the dense urban context, the house adopts an inward-focused layout that prioritizes privacy, comfort, and environmental performance.
The architectural centerpiece is a third-floor garden courtyard connected by a lightweight steel walkway shaped like a flowing ribbon. This elevated green space acts as a climatic buffer, bringing daylight and ventilation deep into the house while maintaining privacy from neighboring buildings. Rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation, and an integrated planting system further enhance sustainability, creating a self-contained urban oasis within the dense fabric of Hanoi.
