Flooding isn’t only caused by heavy rain, it’s often the result of neglected rivers.

Across Kenya, rivers like Nairobi, Nyando, and Nzoia are increasingly clogged by silt, waste, and sediment, reducing their capacity to safely carry water.

But in other countries like the USA, the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) is a federal-scale program to recover the Everglades’ hydrology (reservoirs, stormwater treatment areas, rehydration). It’s costly and long-running but shows how infrastructure + ecosystem work together. Early wins include improved water flow in targeted areas, return of some native species, and enhanced water quality in restored sections. The program highlights the scale, costs, and governance needed for landscape restoration.

Desilting is no longer optional.
It’s a climate resilience strategy and a life-saving one.

Healthy rivers aren’t a luxury. They’re a necessity.

Machakos residents haven’t seen water in their taps for three weeks, yet Maruba Dam sits just a few kilometres away.

This dam has served the community since the 1950s, supplying clean water to over 200,000 people. But today, families are forced to buy borehole water at 1 bob per litre, while government offices still have full storage tanks.

This is more than a supply issue, it’s a sign of deeper challenges affecting water systems across Kenya: silted dams, climate stress, and aging distribution networks.

The good news?
We can fix this by desilting existing dams, restoring river catchments, upgrading water pipelines, and investing in long-term water security solutions.

Every Kenyan deserves reliable, clean water.
Let’s push for systems that work not temporary relief.
