Why clients don’t call back after receiving a painter’s quote
1. The price shocked them.
They had a figure in their head before asking for the quotation. Your professional calculation may simply be higher than what they imagined.
2. They are collecting quotations.
Some clients will send the same job to 5–10 painters. They aren’t ready to hire you yet; they’re simply comparing prices.
3. Someone gave them a cheaper price.
And this is where many painters start panicking and reducing their own price.
Meanwhile, the other painter may have removed surface preparation, quality materials, labour, protection, finishing coats, or even common sense from the quotation. 😂
4. Your quotation doesn’t explain the value.
If all the client sees is:
Labour — £150
Materials — £700
Total — £ 850
They may not understand why you’re charging what you’re charging.
5. They weren’t serious from the beginning.
Some people ask for quotations because they’re planning ahead, testing the market, or simply curious about the current cost.
6. Your follow-up was poor—or nonexistent.
Sending a quotation and disappearing isn’t always enough. A professional follow-up can remind the client that you’re still available and interested in the project.
7. They don’t trust you yet.
Especially for expensive decorative finishes. A client may like your price but still wonder:
“Can this painter actually deliver what I’m paying for?”
8. You quoted without properly selling the process.
Clients aren’t only buying paint on a wall. They’re buying preparation, skill, neatness, durability, finishing quality and someone who can take responsibility for the result.
