Happy September from the drylands of Northern Kenya-KCWC

Wherever you are in the world, a new season is on the horizon.

Here on the northern rangelands, autumn isn't about falling leaves, it’s about the subtle shift in grazing pressures, the quiet migration of pastoral herds, and the patient wait for the short rains. The soil holds its breath, carrying the weight of the dry season before the cycle resets.

That’s the nature of nature. It adapts, rests, and regenerates without friction.

Let go. Bloom. Take it in.

With kind regards,

Rest in Peace…

Dolly Parton was a true advocate for our planet.

Through her Dollywood theme park, she backed the American Eagle Foundation with millions in funding to rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife. She established the Eagle Mountain Sanctuary on her grounds, directly aiding the release of over 180 bald eagles into the wild to restore declining populations.

Beyond raptor conservation, she restored native monarch butterfly habitats by integrating pollinator-friendly flora across her properties to support vulnerable insect species. She also used her platform with National Geographic to urge the public to address climate change and reduce human impact on natural ecosystems.

Happy World Elephant Day!🦣

A reminder to protect these magnificent giants and the forests they call home. Every elephant matters, and protecting them means protecting entire ecosystems. 💚🌍

Let’s stand for coexistence, conservation, and a future where elephants continue to roam free. 🐘✨

🦁Happy International World Lion Day!🦁

Lions are far more than apex predators, they are crucial ecological keystones driving rangeland resilience across East Africa’s arid lands.

Today, Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy(KCWC) joined Ewaso Lions and the Lerata community to mark World Lion Day. Beyond celebrating these magnificent big cats, our gathering served as a critical platform to address the growing pressures threatening their survival across the wider Ewaso ecosystem, specifically ongoing habitat fragmentation, illegal wildlife trade, and increasing land-use conflicts.

Protecting these populations requires sound, science-based range management combined with active community stewardship. When we safeguard the lion, we preserve the health, biodiversity, and future of our shared rangelands...

NDMA RACE FOR PEACE AND RESILIENCE, ARCHER'S POST, SAT 8TH AUG 2026

Under the shimmering heat of Archer’s Post, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) orchestrated a masterstroke of community-driven philanthropy. This wasn't merely a race; it was a high-stakes sprint for resilience, targeting the critical water deficit in the parched reaches of Samburu East.

The atmosphere at the Archer’s Livestock Market was electric, bridging the gap between grassroots grit and high-level policy. Hosted in Archer's Post, Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy generously participated in the event that saw a formidable assembly of leadership. H.E. Governor Lati Lelelit flagged off the event, flanked by a phalanx of County Commissioners from Isiolo and Samburu, KDF brass, and corporate titans from the banking, NGO and multi sectors.

On the track, the competition was a breathtaking display of regional synergy. Morans from across the four-county corridor -- Isiolo, Marsabit, Laikipia, and Samburu -- thundered alongside KDF personnel, local women, and resilient elders. It was a cross-generational charge toward a singular, life-sustaining goal: water security.

The outcome was a historic philanthropic milestone. By the final lap, the initiative had leveraged over KES 50 million, earmarked for transformative borehole drilling. This event transcended a local fundraiser; it was a high-octane manifestation of national solidarity, proving that when traditional warriors and modern institutions converge, the result is a victory for the very soul of the ASAL regions.

Reticulated Giraffe Rapid Fieldwork Assessment & Forage Dynamics – Buffalo Springs National Reserve (BSNR)

We spent the day on the ground in Buffalo Springs evaluating forage availability and movement patterns of the northern Kenya Reticulated Giraffe population.

When you spend years tracking rangeland health across Samburu and Isiolo, patterns become clear very quickly. The interaction between seasonal browse availability, woody canopy cover, and local livestock pressure dictates where these giraffes move and how long they can key into specific feeding corridors. Right now, post-rain vegetation flush is holding in key pockets along the Ewaso Nyiro drainage, but thermal stress and selective over-browsing on preferred Acacia species are forcing herds into tighter, high-risk foraging zones.

Conservation isn't managed from a desk. It requires tracking stem-density consumption, soil moisture retention, and community-led corridor protection side by side. At Kalama CommunityConservancy, our work hinges on balancing habitat connectivity with community livelihoods, ensuring our rangelands remain resilient enough to sustain both livestock and critical wildlife populations long into the future.
