Distant Days, Summer I
1995
Oil on canvas
181.8 × 259.0 cm

Following the Distant Hometown series, this large-scale painting also takes Akeyama’s mother as its central subject. In 1994, he painted Distant Hometown with his mother as the model, and that line of work continued into this painting the following year.

Beneath a blue sky, the mother stands prominently at the centre of the composition, surrounded by children. While the scene retains the familiarity of a family image, the traces of passing years inscribed on her face and arms, together with her upright figure seemingly opening toward the sky, give the painting a presence that extends beyond personal recollection.

The work was selected for the 1995 Yasui Award Exhibition. Following the selection of Distant Hometown I the previous year, this marked Akeyama’s second consecutive appearance in the exhibition.

The painting is now held in the collection of Aomori Television and displayed at its headquarters. The second image is an archival photograph taken when the work entered the collection, showing Akeyama standing before the painting with Mr. Nakamura, then president of Aomori Television.

In Ouyoshi Akeyama’s paintings, travel does not remain as simple documentation. Over many years, encounters with Siberia, North Africa, newspapers, sleeping bodies, mothers and children, and distant landscapes return in altered pictorial forms. These motifs are not separate subjects, but different entrances into one process: lived experience taking root within the painter and slowly settling into painting.

Napping-C
1987
Oil on canvas
162.0 × 162.0 cm
Excellence Award, 4th Japan Young Artists Exhibition

The image of a figure sleeping on newspapers became one of the important motifs that would recur in Akeyama’s later work. Among these early examples, Napping-C stands as a particularly significant painting.

Compared with the precision of his later works, this painting retains a rougher brushwork and a direct force that seems to press outward from the entire surface. Rather than a finish refined through technique, the sleeping body and the mass of newspapers appear as one urgent image. This raw immediacy is one of the work’s great strengths.

Before Napping-C was shown at the 4th Japan Young Artists Exhibition, Churyo Sato, one of the leading sculptors of postwar Japan, visited Akeyama’s studio and saw the painting there. Later, Sato sent Akeyama a handwritten postcard, recalling his encounter with the work again at the exhibition and offering words of encouragement.

Following the previous year, Napping-C received Akeyama’s second consecutive Excellence Award at the Japan Young Artists Exhibition. It became one of the works through which he left a strong impression as an emerging painter at the time.

The second photo was taken in Akeyama’s studio before Napping-C was exhibited. From left: Churyo Sato, Ouyoshi Akeyama, Akeyama’s wife Masako, and Yasumasa Suetake.

【On Genichiro Inokuma】

In 1990, Genichiro Inokuma contributed a text to Ouyoshi Akeyama’s exhibition catalogue. Writing of a figure asleep on newspapers, he recognized an obstinate pursuit belonging to the artist alone and described its movement as “like the flow of a glacier.”

Their connection began in 1975, when Akeyama visited Inokuma’s Denenchofu studio to show him his paintings. Inokuma welcomed the young painter, spoke frankly about the work, encouraged him after rejection, urged him to look beyond Japan, and wrote to him in France. He seems to have sensed Akeyama’s urgency and seriousness, and responded by helping him move forward.

Akeyama later traveled from Paris through North Africa, experiences that would resonate in his later figures and newspaper motifs. Years later, their connection continued through Inokuma’s stage curtain Cosmic Embryo for the Towada Civic Cultural Center.

Mother and Child-F
1998
Oil on Canvas
194.0 × 259.0 cm
Collection of Hachinohe Art Museum

What first draws attention in Mother and Child-F is the two bodies turned away from one another. In Akeyama’s figurative paintings, the direction and distance of the body often play a central role in shaping the tension of the image.

Although they are mother and child, the two figures do not embrace or look at one another. Yet they are not completely separated either. Within that slightly displaced distance, intimacy and separation, softness and tension, are held at the same time. The urban images and printed matter spread across the lower part of the painting also seem to quietly bring the time of the outside world and a sense of society into this private scene.

The second image shows the work installed in the 2024 exhibition Adventure in the Galleries at Hachinohe Art Museum. Seen in an actual space, the distance between the two bodies and the stillness of the entire painting feel even stronger.

Hachinohe Art Museum holds several works by Akeyama, including other mother-and-child paintings and works related to Khabarovsk, Russia.

Evening on the Amur is a landscape that Akeyama returned to repeatedly through his research trips to Siberia. Alongside the people he encountered there, the wide surface of the Amur River and the light of evening must also have remained strongly in his memory. Between the broad river and the open sky, a quiet sense of travel, distance, and departure seems to linger.

In a 2022 interview, Akeyama described the landscape around Khabarovsk in contrast to the North African landscapes he had once seen, calling it “different from the desert, but still a vast landscape of horizons.”

The Amur River region is a borderland where the Russian Far East and China face one another. Yet what Akeyama seems to have seen there was not the political border itself, but a “near yet distant land” opening further north from Tohoku — a place where people live within the river, climate, and horizon.

The later photographs were taken by Akeyama around the Amur River at the time.

[About Nobi (Wildfire)]

Nobi / Cogito, ergo sum
2025
Oil on Canvas
227.3 × 181.8 cm

Nobi (Wildfire) is one of the central series of Ouyoshi Akeyama’s later years. One point of departure was his memory of forest fires seen during travels in Siberia.

In Nobi / Cogito, ergo sum, a child’s figure, fragments of newspaper, and a burning forest do not close into a single meaning. Rather, several motifs that have appeared throughout Akeyama’s work meet again with renewed force.

The newspapers around the figure suggest events already mediated, reported, and read, while the children in the series often seem to look back at us rather than explain what has happened. The title “Cogito, ergo sum” may also be drawn toward the small body that continues to think, and to exist, in an unstable world.

Critic Yasumasa Suetake once called Akeyama “a painter with magma,” while poet and critic Misako Yarita described this series as “a dialogue with the future.” In these works, the two phrases seem to echo each other from afar.

The later images show different Nobi works in progress. Across separate canvases, wildfire, children’s figures, and scorched landscapes gradually take shape in the studio.

Guardian
2006
Oil on Canvas
72.7 × 60.6 cm

The figures in Akeyama’s Siberian series are not formed only through images of women. In Guardian, his attention turns toward the frontier in another form. What appears here is the sensation of a body standing at a boundary, as if guarding something by simply remaining there.

Wrapped in a heavy hat and thick clothing, this figure does not openly display emotion. Yet in his quiet stance, there seems to be a will to remain standing while enduring cold and solitude. To live on the frontier may also mean to wear the tension and silence of that place on one’s own body.

The final two images show men who served as models for Akeyama during his time there. In both, one can sense a quiet strength, as if they are standing while accepting the cold and the place itself.

Distant Hometown II
1994
Oil on Canvas
162.0 × 162.0 cm

Like Distant Hometown I, this work was painted from the image of Akeyama’s elderly mother.

Compared with the force of Distant Hometown I, this painting at first seemed much quieter. Yet looking at it again, I began to feel another kind of weight within that quietness.

Here, the mother appears as an individual person, but also as a presence carrying long years and memory. Within a stillness that seems almost suspended in time, the fine details of the clothing and each wrinkle marked into the hands seem to hold the time of someone who remained in place and lived through many years.

Perhaps a single portrait could not exhaust what Akeyama needed to approach. That may be why he returned to this image again and again. To paint the same subject repeatedly was also a way of testing, in another form, what that image could hold.

Distant Hometown I
1994
Oil on Canvas
181.8 × 227.3 cm

In 1994, just before his mother passed away, Akeyama made several paintings using her as his model. Distant Hometown I was the first of them.In the same year, it was also selected for the Yasui Prize Exhibition, often described as the Akutagawa Prize of the Japanese art world.

A mother sits quietly on a large rock, with a distant range of mountains opening behind her. Her face, withholding overt emotion, looks back at us in silence. In the deeply marked lines of her face and the stillness of her posture, one feels the weight of long years directly inscribed.

Yasumasa Suetake, a long-time reader of Akeyama’s work and former director of Towada City Central Hospital, later wrote of this Distant Hometown image that it was “filled with deep tenderness and had the character of a religious painting, as if inviting us toward an age when people believed in God with simplicity.” Rooted deeply in personal memory and longing, Distant Hometown I is one of the most important works in Akeyama’s figurative practice, fixing those emotions into a single and unwavering image.

This work was later lost in a fire at its holding location and no longer survives. Today it can only be revisited through documentation, and that history, too, has become part of what makes the work so affecting.
