【 JIA 2050 Carbon Neutral Seminar 】
Last night, I had the honor of speaking at the JIA (The Japan Institute of Architects) 2050 Carbon Neutral Seminar Series, titled "Messages from 'Earth Architects': Dialogues with Architects Engaging with Earth," alongside Izumi Sakata, Shinsaku Suzuki, and Harufumi Yasuda.
My presentation was themed "Critical Circularism: Redefining 'Earth' and Critical Circularity in the Anthropocene." I redefined the "Contemporary Earth" of the Anthropocene not as natural ground, but as anthropogenic "residue"—such as excavated soil and industrial waste. True resource circularity is an approach that acknowledges the history of human intervention in these residues, gives them form and meaning, and uses architecture as a medium to facilitate their next cycle.
Through my 15-year journey with the "Creative Resource" initiative—reintegrating untapped resources into architecture—we were able to deepen our perspective on a new material ethics, where architecture contributes to circularity as a temporary material bank.
Thank you to everyone who tuned in, and to Mr. Sakata, Mr. Suzuki, and Mr. Yasuda for the passionate and engaging discourse!
