What is the function of an Oil Level Switch in a Motor Gearbox? ⚙️🛢️

An Oil Level Switch is used to monitor the oil level inside a gearbox and provide an electrical signal when the oil level becomes too low or reaches a defined level.

🔹 How does it work?
The switch operates using a float mechanism. As the gearbox oil level changes, the float moves up or down and changes the condition of an internal electrical contact.

🔹 Working Principle:
Oil Level → Float Movement → Contact Changes → 24V DC Signal → PLC/DCS Alarm or Trip

🔹 24V DC Supply:
Typically, 24V DC is supplied to the switch circuit, and depending on the contact arrangement (NO/NC), the switch sends a signal back to the PLC/DCS digital input.

⚠️ The exact wiring and contact logic can vary depending on the manufacturer’s design and whether the switch is configured as Low Level Alarm, Low-Low Level Trip, or High Level indication.

This simple instrument plays an important role in gearbox protection and reliable motor operation.

Loop Checking is an important commissioning activity in instrumentation. It verifies the complete signal path from the field instrument → JB → Marshalling Cabinet → DCS/PLC.

❄️ Cold Loop Check
• Instrument is isolated from the actual process.
• Wiring, termination, polarity, continuity, and signal transmission are verified.
• The loop is checked without actual process conditions.

🔥 Hot Loop Check
• The instrument is checked under actual process conditions.
• Real process signals are verified at the DCS/PLC.
• PV, alarms, interlocks, indications, and control actions can be verified.

__In simple words:

Cold Loop = Wiring & Signal Path Verification
Hot Loop = Actual Process Signal & Functional Verification
