In contemporary residences, an often underutilised design strategy to integrate pause points into any space are courtyards.

In this Delhi villa, our explorations led us to work with the city’s climate while tactically mitigating its pitfalls.

The informal dining courtyard, a part of our exploratory series adds to our iterative efforts to further our spatial problem solving abilities. This ensures that nothing is left to be desired when delivering the final outcome.

For this Ahmedabad residence, our primary challenge in conceptualising the overall theme was accommodating a multiplicity of styles, not just age groups.
Shown here is the informal lounge, which masterfully carries the playfulness of the children’s side of the house while borrowing finesse from the parents’ recreation and hosting areas.
Spread across a sprawling 4.5-acre plot, the villa manifests grandeur through an expansive footprint rather than vertical stacking— a feature only reserved for sites with natural bounty.

Preluding the magnificently pirouetted staircase is the grand foyer of this Indore residence.

We are greeted by gold-foliage alcoves, where two contemporary sculptures sit in quiet contrast. The neoclassical language extends through the wall sconces, travertine walls, and the characteristic beige wallpaper cladding the dome.

Dividing the elongated hallway into two, the foyer serves as a striking visual spectacle upon entrance.

At AKDG, we honour spaces through material intelligence. A space is shaped as much by its materiality as by its fixtures and furnishings.

For this multigenerational residence, our challenge was to tie various individualistic sensibilities into a common visual language. We tackled this by assigning varying degrees of formality to each function. Shown here is the informal dining room.

The outdoor-facing dining room maintains its identity as a breezy, tropical Indian summer. The hand-painted mural is reflective of that. The theme of the space rightly celebrates the abundance of the natural light influx.

This and other recreational spaces are scattered throughout the site, while the residential spaces remain clustered and sacrosanct for the family’s privacy.
