The interiors came after the plan. The character came from the people living here.

At Anandanilayam, the client had a clear preference for classical furniture — pieces with detail, weight and a traditional character that simply felt like home to him.

That became an important part of how the interiors developed. The furniture, his collection of books, familiar objects and everyday requirements were given their place within the planning, instead of forcing the home into a predetermined style.

The result is something I value about this project even today.

It feels considered, but still feels like their home.

Anandanilayam came to us as a builder-completed apartment in Whitefields, Hyderabad.

The walls were built. Services were in place. The intention wasn't to demolish everything and start again.

We first looked at how the family would actually move through the common spaces.

The dining area sat within a movement path. The living room opened directly into shared circulation. Storage and crockery requirements hadn't found a proper place. An unused corner near the balcony had more potential than its existing layout suggested.

So the plan changed before the interiors did.

The dining area moved closer to the kitchen. The balcony-side corner became a reading space for the client's books. A partition gave the living area more privacy from the bedroom passage, and the circulation became clearer without making unnecessary structural changes.

These aren't the details that immediately show up in a finished photograph.

But they are the decisions that determine how the home works every day.

The drawing room opened directly towards the balcony.

Dining sat within a regular movement path.

And movement between the kitchen, living and bedrooms kept crossing spaces meant to be occupied.

It wasn't only circulation.

The home still needed a place for books, crockery and everyday storage.

And more privacy between the common areas and bedrooms.

So we worked with the existing structure.

Dining moved closer to the kitchen.

The released space became a reading corner beside the balcony.

A clearer movement path was created through the common areas.

A partition between the living room and common passage helped control views towards the more private parts of the home.

The plan was resolved around how this home would actually be lived in.
The interiors followed.

It usually sounds like a small question.

“Can this also be added?”

It comes up more often than expected.
And most of the time, there is nothing wrong with the idea itself.
There may even be enough space for it.

The part that isn't immediately visible is what happens around it once the answer becomes yes.

One thing moves. Another decision opens again. Something that was already settled may need another look.
What started as one addition slowly becomes part of a much larger decision.

Before adding something to a space, what else should be considered along with it?

Journal 05 — The Way Homes Begin.

There always seems to be room for one more thought.

Possible doesn't always mean decided.

The addition wasn't staying where it started.

One change had quietly reopened another.

Some questions get bigger once the answer is yes.

Three firms.
Three quotations.
Three different ways to begin.

The quotations arrived.
Different prices.
Different timelines.
Different inclusions.

The comparison started almost immediately.
Most homeowners compare the numbers because that's the only thing visible.
But a quotation can only respond to the brief it's been given.
And that raises a quieter question.

What if the brief itself hasn't been understood yet?

Not every home needs the same priorities.
Not every family lives the same way.
Maybe the first decision isn't choosing between quotations.
Maybe it's understanding what the home should actually be built around.

Journal 03

What would you want to understand about your home before comparing quotations?

The quotations answered what they offered.
The home still hadn't answered what it needed.

A quotation can only respond to the brief it's given.

The quotations answered what they offered.
The home still hadn't answered what it needed.

A quotation can only respond to the brief it's given.

Sometimes the first thing is worth comparing...is expectations.

The quotations can wait.
The question can't.

Buying a home feels like the finish line.

Then the first weekend arrives.

The phone starts ringing.

A quotation comes in.

A friend shares a reference.

Someone asks about the kitchen.

Someone else asks about the budget.

Nothing has gone wrong.

Nothing has even been built.

Yet every conversation suddenly feels urgent.

Looking back, it wasn't the number of decisions.

It was deciding which one should have come first.

Most clients come to us with references.

A living room they liked. A kitchen they saved. A bedroom from Pinterest.

There's nothing wrong with that. References are a great way to understand what someone is drawn to. But that's never where we begin.

The first few weeks of every project are spent understanding how the home needs to work. Where does everyone naturally gather? What needs to stay close? What can move? We test different layouts, question our own decisions and keep refining the plan until the space feels effortless to live in.

Only after that do we start talking about materials, colours and design language. By then, aesthetics aren't leading the project anymore—they're strengthening a plan that's already working.

That's also why you'll never see us forcing a style into a space. Whether it's Japandi, contemporary, modern or something else entirely, the design language should adapt to the plan, not the other way around.

Whether we're designing a home in Hyderabad or working with clients across India, our process always starts the same way—with planning. That's what allows every decision that follows to have purpose.

We never start with aesthetics.

We don't plan the space around aesthetics. We plan aesthetics around the space.

If you're planning a home, don't just ask whether you like the design. Ask whether the planning works for the way you'll live. That one conversation can change the entire project.

A Look Back
Some projects are worth revisiting—not because they've changed, but because enough time has passed to reflect on the decisions that shaped them.

Project: Sea of Whispers
Client: Jaya Reddy
Budget: 47Lakhs
Location: Kokapet, Hyderabad

Before the finishes, before the furniture, before the photographs… there was a plan that needed to be questioned.
Understanding the people first.

Once the planning was resolved, the interiors became a continuation of the architecture—not a layer added afterwards.

The details took shape

Ex*****on is where every line on paper is tested. Site visits aren't inspections—they're opportunities to refine the design.

The dining area takes shape

Months of planning, coordination and ex*****on begin to come together as one cohesive experience.

Every detail had a reason

Looking back today, we would still make the same planning decisions.
Because the best design decisions continue to make sense long after handover.

Where drawings become reality

The planning decisions, site challenges, material choices and conversations with our clients continue to influence how we approach every home that follows.
