Cover blocks are small spacers placed between the reinforcement steel and the formwork to maintain the required concrete cover. They help ensure that the steel is fully embedded in concrete.
Purpose: Protect reinforcement from corrosion, fire, and moisture while maintaining the correct position of the steel bars during concreting.
Common materials: Concrete (cement mortar), plastic, or fiber-reinforced cover blocks.
Typical cover for slabs: Usually 20 mm for indoor RCC slabs, though the required cover depends on the structural design and applicable building code.
Placement: Positioned beneath the bottom reinforcement at regular intervals (typically every 0.5–1 m) so the bars do not touch the shuttering.
