अक्सर लोग कॉकरोच को केवल एक घरेलू कीट (Pest) के रूप में देखते हैं।
लेकिन हाल ही में Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) द्वारा किए गए अध्ययन ने एक बेहद रोचक तथ्य सामने रखा है।

🪳 India is Home to 191 Species of Cockroaches — And 60% Exist Only in India!

Most people see cockroaches only as household pests.
But recent research by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has revealed something surprising — India has an incredible diversity of cockroach species, and many of them are found nowhere else in the world.

Scientists have identified 191 species in India, with nearly 60% being endemic, meaning they are unique to our ecosystem and biodiversity.

This study also highlights an important fact:

👉 Not all cockroaches are harmful.
👉 Many wild species play a critical role in nature by helping decompose organic matter and recycle nutrients back into the environment.

Rodents are not a pest control problem.
They are an infrastructure problem.

In my last post, we discussed trends around insects and flies.
Today, let’s talk about something far more critical — Rodent Infrastructure Proofing.

Because once a rodent enters your facility, control becomes reactive.
Prevention is the real game.

From my experience in food safety and quality systems, rodent control stands firmly on two pillars:

1️⃣ Infrastructure Proofing (Primary Defense)

2️⃣ Eliminating Attraction (Food & Shelter)

Let’s break this down.

🔹 1. Infrastructure Proofing — Stop Entry Before Control

Rodents don’t need large openings.
A gap as small as a finger is enough.

High-risk entry points often ignored:
• Drain openings and gutters
• Cable entry points and wire penetrations
• False ceiling gaps and cable trays
• Door gaps and poorly sealed shutters
• AHU openings and duct interfaces

👉 Rodents don’t “enter”… they navigate these like highways.

Key actions:
• Seal all wire entry points completely — no partial sealing
• Install proper mesh on drain openings
• Close cable trays at external entry points
• Implement a zero-gap policy for doors
• Keep doors closed, especially during night hours

⚠️ One open gap = One entry point = One infestation risk.

🔹 2. Harbourage Control — Stop Them From Settling

Even if entry happens, settlement can still be prevented.

Common hidden habitats inside facilities:
• False ceilings
• Cable trays
• Inside AHU systems
• Behind unused equipment

Actions:
• Avoid false ceilings in processing areas (wherever possible)
• Clean ceiling voids and cable trays regularly
• Inspect AHU systems routinely
• Remove unused equipment OR seal it completely

👉 No shelter = No stay.

🔹 3. Eliminate Attraction — No Food, No Rodents

Rodents enter only when they find food + safety.

Critical practices:
• Zero exposed food waste policy
• Always keep bins closed and tied
• Scrap yards away from processing zones
• Immediate cleaning of spillages

✅ A clean plant is the strongest deterrent.

Rodent control is not about traps and poisons.
It is about discipline in design, maintenance, and hygiene.

If your infrastructure is tight,
your pest control program becomes simple.

If not,
