Adam Raphael Markowitz holds graduate degrees in both Architecture and Furniture Design, and has attended graduate schools of design & craft in Melbourne, Hobart, The Netherlands (TUDelft) and Denmark (The Roy

al Academy). Adam brings a multifaceted, interdisciplinary approach to design, with over two years of professional experience in the field of architecture, complimented by graduate studies at schools of furniture design/woodcraft in both Tasmania and Denmark. Exposed in those schools to fine craft and traditional joinery, he has developed a design philosophy that values the intimate connection between design and fabrication, and the new opportunities found at the intersection of modern digital processes and traditional methods of craftsmanship.

The class followed the form of a Beaux-Arts style charrette - short, intensive design exercises with limited parameters to get the students to work repetitively through the design process itself, and understand the design as a network of interrelated decisions, and the skill in design as being the ability to navigate that decision making process.

There was a huge spectrum of experience levels, with some students having had previous design training, while others having never considered it at all previously. Being 5 months in to the training program, everyone had good competency in the workshop.

Still dusting myself off flying into the middle of Design Week from the USA, where I’d been teaching a 5 week design focused class as part of the 9 month comprehensive program at alongside head teacher , the second time teaching this segment. Such a privilege to head back to my old school, see old friends, make new ones and just be immersed for a short time in a world completely focused on excellence in the craft. Thanks to all the students who patiently put up with my derived curriculum which is a bit of a change of affairs after 5 months doing capital W Woodworking with the likes of .h.harris and . There were no beach balls this time, but we did have some Blair witch stools getting made at one point…

Hyperbolic Chair
Stainless steel rod

Using the Parabolic Hyperbola, this chair appears doubly curved but contains only straight structural elements. Sitting on this chair allows the body to form itself to these implied curves. The chair can be sat on perpendicularly; or lengthwise, where the curve supports the back like a hammock.

Fabricated in stainless steel by Robert Hook

Revising a concept originally developed while a student at in 2012 while undertaking “One Chair a Week” class.

Tucked away in a central Melbourne park, wunderkind chef ’s first solo restaurant, .au, takes diners on a journey of discovery.

Designed in collaboration with renowned local architect John Wardle or .studio, the restaurant features an entrance clad with more than 13,000 terracotta tiles crafted by and mimicking the bark of the surrounding century-old Scottish elm trees.

Ceramic tableware by Jacqueline Clayton and Paul Davis of sits next to vases by in a blackwood timber cabinet built by , while in the private dining area, a handblown glass ‘Kindling’ pendant by and hangs above a cypress table by .

Feeling very honoured to have received a Commendation at the awards on Friday night. Against such a competitive and established field to even make it to the final shortlist, and then get this recognition from the jury has been a fantastic outcome.

Details of the Cabinet of Curiosities
Showing off hand cut dovetails and turned 10,000y.o ancient Redgum pulls. The drawers are piston fit in a traditional fine woodworking manner - no runners.
Custom designed & made brass pulls, with pull out keyboard platform and tambour doors designed to allow the piece to transition from WFH during the day to recessive cabinet at night.

Further details of the Cabinet of Curiosities

Using the tambours to make the doors “disappear” allowing visual permeability and allow for a combination of concealed and permanent display storage, play with the idea of mass and transparency.
