Certification is optional. Good design is not.

A rating is a useful check — it was never the goal. You can certify a building that performs poorly. You can also build one that's never been certified and performs beautifully every single month.

The passive strategy — orientation, shading, ventilation — gets resolved before any system gets specified. The certificate is a moment in time. Performance is what happens after, on the electricity bill, every month for the next 20 years.

The first monsoon flatters a building. The third one tells the truth.

At RTC SPIPA, the brick was left exposed on purpose — no cladding to hide behind, just the material weathering in the open through Gujarat's heat and rain. Three monsoons after handover, we went back to check what it's actually doing.

Verdict: a natural patina, not damage. Minor efflorescence, no cracking. Almost nothing on the maintenance sheet.

The real project starts after occupancy. This is what performance looks like when no one's watching.

RTC SPIPA, Mehsana — one courtyard, two jobs.

It's the campus's cooling system and its social centre — sized and angled before a single duct was drawn, to pull hot air up through all three floors while giving every floor a space to look into.

No running cost. No maintenance calls. Just geometry, doing the work every day.

That's passive cooling — decided in week one, not bolted on at the end.

The name on the door is one person.

The idea behind the building — and the work that protected it — is many.
A cantilever pushed further than the drawings first allowed. A parapet detail that kept it from leaking. A clash caught before it cost anyone money.
