How global warming is going to effect on fresh produce supply chain on the GCC Countries
This summer is showing us that global warming is real and it's here!!
Europe is experiencing an extremely hot summer which is affecting the local environment in more than one way. In Europe the majority of the greenhouses are glasshouses and not having an active cooling systems like wet pad and exhaust fan which means that their ability to protect from the increasing temperature in time of heat waves is not exist and temperatures is increasing inside the greenhouse to a level that damaging the crops and reducing the yield quantity and quality.
From my work trips to the UAE and from many visits in different supermarkets (fresh products department) and from my contacts in GCC who shared with me the state of the fresh products in the local supermarkets a fairly uniform picture of the situation emerges: the majority of the fresh products and especially the high quality products are import from Europe and from other countries.
There is a lack of farms in the GCC which is able to grow all year around the same quantities and quality and quite a bit are reduced there operations and some are stop all production during the hottest months of the year.
Combining these three data leads to a conclusion that GCC countries are in a real risk to find themselves in the nearest future without enough fresh products on the shelves.
The solution is very simple: to build up smart advanced sustainable greenhouses which rely on an alternative energy source that in desert countries is sunlight.
Farms that will have cheap energy will be able to afford to install the most efficient climate control systems and create the optimal growing condition inside the greenhouse all year around. Together with precise different growth interfaces according to the crop needs will lead to high quality yield and low production cost per one Kg and high profit.
