Such a loss

Dag Hammarskjöld gave his life for peace. The former UN Secretary-General was killed in a plane crash 65 years ago today, on 18 September 1961, while on a peace mission in the Congo.

These were some of the messages, our Vice-Chair Ivan Matić brought today to the discussion on the EU Strategy for Islands at the COTER Commission of the European Committee of the Regions in Cáceres.

🏝️ From recognition to delivery. The new EU Strategy for Islands is an important step. Now it has to work in practice.

For ESIN, that means:

✅ measuring the real cost of insularity, including time and accessibility, not only direct financial costs;

✅ developing island-proofing at national level, in line with subsidiarity and together with island communities;

✅ recognising that equal rules do not always produce equal impact;

✅ using Article 174 and the new Strategy to make clear that tailored island solutions are possible;

✅ giving small islands practical tools: better data, accessible funding, pre-financing and stronger local capacity.

Small islands are not asking Europe to eliminate geography. We are asking for the tools to manage its consequences and use our potential.

Ivan Matić, of Island Movement and ESIN, with Rapporteur Noel Formosa.
