Arigna

Arigna Official page for Arigna Valley. Arigna is a picturesque village in North Roscommon set in the green valley of the Arigna River alongside Lough Allen.

Situated between Sliabh an Iarann (Iron Mountain) in the East, Kilronan Mountain in the West and Corrie Mountain to the North. It has beautiful scenery and unspoiled rugged landscapes. Its also has a wider community of Families, Houses and Townlands that stretch across three neighbouring Counties – Roscommon, Leitrim and Sligo. Its steeped in history and folklore and the last coal mine in Ireland w

as here in Arigna. The Arigna area has a long tradition of mining which dates back to the 1600s when Charles Coote established iron works at Crevelea and Arigna. Charcoal, made from local timber, was used in the smelting process; however, as local timber supplies reduced, it was necessary to find an alternative fuel. It was through this search that coal was discovered in the area. In 1788 the O’Reilly brothers founded an iron foundry where, for the first time in Ireland, coal was used in the smelting process. Iron mining actually turned out to be less than successful in Arigna and, following many attempts to salvage it, the iron works closed permanently in 1838. Coal mining, however, continued to provide employment in Arigna. In fact, Arigna became a relatively affluent area through times of extreme poverty elsewhere, because of the constant availability of employment for all the men of the area and indeed surrounding areas. When the O Reilly brothers went bankrupt the iron works were managed by operators including the Arigna Iron and Coal Joint Stock Company. The Tenison family arrived in North Connacht in the 18th century and owned extensive mining rights across North Roscommon. In addition to the Tenisons a number of local families and companies played an important role in the coal mining industry. Over the next 150 years coal was used to heat homes and hospitals, and to power steam engines. The ESB opened the Arigna Power Station in 1958, the first major power generating station in Connacht. By this period the supply of top grade coal in Arigna was used and he station was built specifically to burn the semi bituminous coal with its high ash content. At its height, the power station burned 55,000 tons of coal annually and employed 60 people directly. However, from the outset, one of the primary reasons behind its construction was to secure hundreds of jobs in the local mining industry. By the 1970’s 65% of the coal mined in Arigna was burned at the Power Station. Arigna is made up of 37 Townlands as follows: Aghabehy, Aghafin, Altagowlan, Altoghil, Ardcollum, Carrownalt, Corgornam,Cornagee, Crosshill, Derrinavoggy, Derrinisky, Derrynagallion, Giddaun, Glasdrumman, Greagh, Greaghnafarna, Greaghcorra,Greaghnaleava beg, Greaghnaleava more, Greaghnaglogh, Gubbarudda, Kilronan Mountain, Knockadryan, Lislea,Lurgan,Mullaun,Mountallen,Rover Upper, Rover Lower, Seltanneveeny, Strabraggan,Strabra, Srananooan, Tawlaght, Timpaun,Tullynahaw, and Tullytawen. Mount Allen Organic Community Garden

The garden will be open every Friday from 2pm until 4pm. We hope at some stage to be open a second day.

It is early in the season for us with lots of first plantings in, and more to follow. We started sowing seeds under cover in February and it has been a succession of sowing, potting on, hardening off, then planting outdoors when conditions allowed. We are learning as we go and hope this year to have more winter and spring crops to be able to sell early in addition to our salads.

It is our intention to not just sell to the community, but to encourage others to join in. You can come and give us a hand or just observe and have a chat, perhaps share your gardening knowledge. This is very much a learning curve and any help is welcome. Our list of volunteers grows, but not everyone is free on a Friday afternoon. We hope to be more flexible to encourage others to come when the time suits them. Additional times are given on our WhatsApp group for volunteers if you might like to join.

Beautiful, organic lettuces available this week. Potatoes will be coming shortly. The garden continues to expand and grow.

Good luck everyone πŸ€πŸ€
