Can a former industrial unit become a space that celebrates traditional Chinese art?
That was the starting point of this project in **Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong**.
Located inside one of Hong Kong's historic industrial districts, this studio was designed for an artist dedicated to preserving the tradition of Chinese ink painting while working in a contemporary creative environment.
Instead of treating the space like a conventional gallery, we designed it as a place where creation, learning, and exhibition could happen seamlessly under one roof.
A continuous wall of custom timber shelving became the backbone of the studio—displaying finished works, reference books, calligraphy scrolls, ceramics, and painting materials without overwhelming the space. Every shelf was proportioned to create rhythm and balance, echoing the composition found in traditional landscape paintings.
The colour palette was intentionally restrained. Warm oak introduces a natural softness against crisp white walls, allowing the textures, brushwork, and colours of each painting to become the visual focus. Even the lighting was planned to minimise glare while revealing the depth and detail of every artwork.
One of our favourite features is the flexible central workspace. It supports the artist's daily practice, accommodates small classes, and can easily transform into an exhibition area for collectors and visitors—making the studio as functional as it is inspiring.
In a city where space is limited, thoughtful planning is what makes the difference. Every square metre was carefully considered to create an environment that feels open, organised, and deeply connected to the artist's craft.

What detail stands out to you the most—the custom shelving, the material palette, or the way the artwork becomes the focal point? We'd love to hear your thoughts.
