It’s an incredible pleasure to give back to the island by communal projects both as individuals Marion Longley & Alexandra Grypari and as a unit nwmw.gr. We have been trying to study the intangible cultural heritage of the island and come closer to the communities that make Tinos unique and complex and it’s a true honour to be allowed to participate alongside them. A great thanks to the little devils of the environmental team of the technical high school and their teachers, Kostas Karagiorgos & Chryssa Maria Vidalis of Fragiskos, Μιχαλης Κεφαλλωνιτης, Antonis Leivadaris the Αμπασαδα association & Vassiliki Boulerou, the students of the marble craft school and of course our participants that took giving back to the community to heart.

The toichos project is partially funded by Culture Moves Europe & INSTITUT FRANÇAIS.

On the 3rd of May, we visited some very important old farmhouses near the village of Isternia, guided by our mentor the architect and professor, Maria Vidali, in order to get more insight on the island’s vernacular architecture, based on the dry-stone technique, when it is used for farm buildings and auxiliary spaces, and not for retaining walls or rural roads. It was exhausting but vey rewarding. The choice of these particular buildings was based on the book of Machi Karali “Farm houses of Exo Meria of Tinos”.

On April 30th, our program’s mentor Maria Vidali, takes a walk with us in the village of Kampos as we are getting to know a little more bit about Tinos villages and how everyday life has a deep connection with spirituality. We get a closer look of the morphology of the village of Kampos & it’s two very important churches.

On April 25th it was time for our marble craft workshop. It was time for Onoufrios Desipris to show us this thousand year old craft and try to explain its process. The various materials, the colours, the topography, the quarrying, the techniques. The inspiration for the designs and most of all how to create them on marble. And finally our participants picked up the tools and experimented with creating pieces themselves.

On April 24th we had a truly unique experience visiting the Green Marble quarry of Machaira and the white marble quarry of Aghios Eleytherios both in the Exo Meria the northern part of the island. We fought the toxic asbestos and learned so much about minerals and rocks from our second beloved mentor Dr. Ioannis Baziotis. Ioannis did not hesitate to explain the way the Tinos rocks formed, how they are called, why they are colored, how they are colored, their stories and forms. He was so quick witted and kept everybody’s attention with little to no effort. Equally brilliant was our contributing lecturer Sophia Andrioti, a young Tinian archeologist passionate about her island and its traditions that talked to us about the islands history, the dry stone techniques and their relation to the landscape and the islands identity.

“Part 1” at Tinos island

On April 21st right after the Easter Sunday we fought the elements and mainly that of soil, rock and sun. Our technical master Arturo Korda who was nice enough to host us in his fields, took our residents to a tough trip down the tools and dry stone technique lane. They learned the whole process completely from the beginning. They were taught how to tear down the destroyed parts (βουτήγματα), create foundation, choose the stones, cutting and carving the stones, stacking them and then experimented in creating a new form of toichos - wall combining elements of the part and the present.

On April 19th, we visited the Museum of Marble Crafts and the marble workshop of the Higher School of Fine Arts and Marble Craftmanship Panormos Tinos in the village of Pyrgos so that our residents could get acquainted with the intangible heritage of marble craft tradition while waiting for their marble craft workshop on the 25th of April. We get a closer look at the technology of marble, a material that holds a particular place in the architecture and art of Greece, from antiquity through to the present and the intricate meshing of tools and techniques used in working marble in a detailed and live manner, puts an emphasis on the pre- and proto- industrial Tinos, the most important centre of marble crafts in Modern Greece. In parallel, it highlights the social and economic context that the local workshops evolved in.

On April 18th, we had the honour to be given the chance for our mentor Maria Vidali, to walk with us in the village of Tarabados as we are getting to know a little bit about “The farming landscape of Tinos: land, water, ownership and community”. We get a closer look at churches, dovecottes, alleyways, old houses, village springs and more.

Toichos • PROJECT

by .gr

The Toichos project, which surprisingly is pronounced teehos, meaning wall in Greek is a multifaceted initiative organized by .gr based on the idea of .palazzi aiming to connect traditional techniques with contemporary architectural practice combining foreign and local points of view on a multidisciplinary level. Our work revolves around the traditional dry stone technique and its relation with modern material and methods. The project toichos has two phases. The first phase involves both research and creation in situ on the island of Tinos followed by an exhibition presenting the results. The seconds phase involves the publishing of a book in Paris. Our people are the project team, our mentors and our contributors. And our process is divided into mentoring sessions, rural walks, traditional techniques workshops and industrial site visits.
