For this job, we are taking the old failed pebble dash render back to brick before rebuilding the system properly with two layers of reinforced basecoat with mesh, followed by a premium silicone top coat finish.

Should Old Render Be Removed Before Re-Rendering?

In a lot of cases, yes — old render should be removed before applying a new render system, especially if it is cracked, hollow, blown, damp, or coming away from the wall.

Rendering over failed render might look fine for a short time, but if the background underneath is weak, the new system is only bonded to something that is already failing.

Old render may need removing if:
