It's National Baking Week this week.

There's something quite nice about the smell of something baking in the oven, especially at this time of year when the evenings are drawing in.

Whether it's a homemade Victoria sponge, a batch of biscuits or an old family recipe, I think home baking has a way of bringing back memories.

I'm no expert in the kitchen myself, but I can certainly appreciate the effort that goes into it.

Sometimes it's the simple things that make a house feel like home.

❓🚨Friday Question Time🚨❓

Here's one that always seems to divide opinion.

When you're having a scone, what goes on first?

Jam or cream?

And does it really make a difference?

What is RCBO protection, and why does it matter in your home?

If you've had a new consumer unit fitted recently, you may have heard the term RCBO. But what does it actually do?

An RCBO is a safety device fitted inside your consumer unit. It combines two important types of electrical protection in one device.

1. Protection against overloads and short circuits
If too much current flows through a circuit, perhaps because of an electrical fault, the RCBO is designed to switch it off before the wiring becomes dangerously overheated.

2. Protection against earth leakage
An RCBO also monitors the electricity flowing through the circuit. If some of that current takes an unintended path to earth, it can detect the imbalance and disconnect the supply.

A correctly selected 30 mA RCBO provides additional protection against certain types of electric shock. It's an important safety measure, although it cannot prevent every electrical accident.

So what's the advantage of having an RCBO on each circuit?

Imagine your outside lighting develops a fault after heavy rain.

In some older consumer units, several circuits share one RCD. A fault with the outside lights could therefore switch off other circuits too, potentially leaving parts of the house without power.

With individual RCBOs, the faulty lighting circuit would normally trip on its own, leaving the other circuits working.

This can mean less disruption and makes it easier to identify which circuit has developed a problem.

Modern consumer units can be designed with individual RCBO protection, giving each circuit its own protection against overcurrent and earth leakage.

An older consumer unit isn't automatically unsafe simply because it doesn't have individual RCBOs. Its condition and suitability need to be assessed.

If you're considering a consumer unit replacement, or you're having problems with circuits tripping, I'm happy to take a look and explain the options.

I might be slightly biased, but I think Mini Labradoodles are hard to beat.

Since having Paddy, I've definitely developed a soft spot for them.

He's got plenty of character, always seems to be up to something and certainly knows how to make himself the centre of attention.

Wouldn't have him any other way.

❓🚨Friday Question Time🚨❓

When it comes to driving, which do you prefer?

Manual or automatic?

Some people love the control of a manual gearbox, while others wouldn't go back after driving an automatic.

Which camp are you in and why?

Why do modern consumer units often have individual RCBOs?

In some older consumer units, several circuits can share the same RCD.

The downside is that a fault on one circuit can sometimes switch off several others at the same time. So a problem with an outside light, for example, could potentially leave other parts of the house without power too.

With individual RCBOs, each circuit has its own residual current and overcurrent protection. This means a fault on one circuit should normally only disconnect that particular circuit.

It can make faults less disruptive and can also make identifying the affected circuit more straightforward.

I recently replaced a consumer unit in Farcet using individual Type A RCBOs, along with surge protection.

I've written a bit more about the installation and what the different protective devices actually do here:

There are plenty of golf courses I’d love to play one day, but if I could choose just one it would have to be Augusta National.

I’ve only ever seen it on TV, watching the Masters, but it’s one of those places I’d love to see in person one day, never mind actually getting the chance to play it.

Although I’m not sure my golf would quite do the place justice!

Choosing someone to carry out electrical work in your home isn't always easy.

Qualifications and experience are important, but so are things like turning up when agreed, communicating clearly and treating your home with respect.

Being a Which? Trusted Trader gives customers some additional reassurance, as businesses have to go through an assessment process and follow the Which? Trusted Traders Code of Conduct.

I've put together a short article explaining what being a Which? Trusted Trader actually means for customers and a little more about the electrical work I carry out locally.
