I take photographs during my daily commutes in whatever city I am currently living in or visiting, of spaces where we rarely stop and look, but constantly move through. Using these moments in time and the photographs I have taken, as a starting point to create a painting, building up the memory of their layers of surface and pattern in the studio. I focus on their gestural, painterly qualities and the interaction of colour and pattern found on site.
I have always been drawn to these changing surfaces in whatever city I have lived in, growing up in Wrexham, North Wales, before studying in Glasgow, and now living in London, I find that it is through these transitional spaces and my material engagement with them in painting, that I gradually form a relationship with a place. These spaces bring familiarity to whichever city it is I am moving through, they are both an anchor to place and the continuity of my personal way of seeing.
I title works with timestamps to reflect these fleeting moments. I do not want my paintings to give away location nor impose any further associations or explanation upon the viewer, allowing the paintings to speak for themselves by simply highlighting the qualities held in that moment.
