What's on Lindsey's desk today?
This week we're taking a look at what's on Lindsey's desk. Alongside the obvious bits, computer, pens, paper, the things that actually keep her on track are a big notepad, her work mobile, an Excel cheat sheet mouse mat and her diary. A previous manager once told her a diary is one of the most valuable tools you can have in this job. If technology lets you down, you still know your plan for the day, and it's brilliant for looking back over past actions, checking notes and keeping track of deadlines.
Mondays usually start with catching up on anything from the weekend and getting back to clients. Lindsey keeps a tracker showing where things stand with each one, alongside our CRM system for appointments, records and files. Keeping it all up to date means nothing gets missed, deadlines are met and work can be handed off across the team when it needs to be.
Today's focus is getting marketing materials ready for social media and following up on client enquiries. Outside of that, she'll usually be researching planning applications, collating documents and curating a file for whichever enquiry or client it relates to. The aim, as always, is to keep our clients and network informed and looked after.

Meet the team: Ben, Managing Director

Ben is the knowledge, experience and leadership behind Norton Taylor Nunn. He is a Member of the RTPI, and holds a degree in law. He has guided a great many clients through the planning process and has an impressive knack for recalling planning facts that leave the rest of us wondering how he knows them.

He is approachable, thoughtful and always willing to make time for people, which is one of the many reasons he is so highly regarded by the team. Conversations with Ben also have a habit of becoming fascinating Second World War history discussions before anyone quite realises what has happened.

Away from work, Ben is happiest when he's about in the countryside with Patch his dog or talking about the rugby. The office is still waiting to see whether the much discussed Ferguson tractor will eventually make its way home.

A steady hand, a sharp mind and a good sense of humour. We are proud to have him leading the team.

Meet the team: Lindsey, Senior Administrator

Lindsey keeps the office running smoothly, supporting both clients and colleagues and making sure the day to day side of the business stays on track. From handling enquiries to keeping things organised behind the scenes, she is often the person making sure things get done.

Outside of work, Lindsey enjoys long walks with her German Shepherd and White Swiss Shepherd, looking after a garden that has become part wildlife haven and part vegetable plot, and feeding the local ducks, moorhens and geese. Her regular visits have even led to an unlikely friendship with a local swan. She also enjoys knitting and, each year, crochets blankets for local charities in the run up to Christmas. As Lindsey will happily admit, she has rather a lot of hobbies.

She also enjoys baking and is just as likely to spend time working on her Land Rover as she is in the kitchen.

Lindsey is a familiar voice to many of our clients and a vital part of the team.

Not every Wimbledon story happens at Wimbledon.

One of our more memorable planning successes involved securing retrospective consent for a tennis court in the grounds of a Grade II listed country house owned by an internationally renowned musician.

It's a reminder that even seemingly simple works can require careful navigation of the planning system when heritage assets are involved.

We don't just deal with housing schemes. Sometimes planning permission is won one set at a time.

Meet David Harmon.

David leads on planning objections across the practice.

Most people know when a development feels wrong.

The challenge is explaining why in planning terms.

That's where many objections fall down.

Planning decisions are based on policy, not public opinion. David's role is to identify the points that actually matter and present them in a way the planning system can engage with.

Have you ever submitted a planning objection yourself? If so, what was the outcome?

Would you want this next door?

Most people know instinctively when a development feels wrong.

The challenge is explaining why in planning terms.

Overlooking? Loss of privacy? Scale? Dominance?

Those concerns may be valid, but if they're going to influence a planning decision they need to be linked back to planning policy.

What would concern you most about this proposal?

Why do so many planning representations fail to influence the outcome?

Because planning decisions are made against policy rather than public opinion.

Whether supporting or opposing development, the most effective representations identify clear areas of compliance or conflict with adopted planning policy.

Understanding that distinction is fundamental to the planning process.

Most planning objections are ignored.

Not because the concern is wrong.

Because the planning system makes decisions based on planning policy, not public opinion.

If an objection doesn't clearly identify a conflict with policy, it's very easy for it to be dismissed.

Over the next few weeks we'll be sharing what actually makes a planning objection carry weight, and why some objections succeed where others fail.

Have you ever objected to a planning application?
